Graphic Designer

Cardiff University is evolving its branding and a big part of its rollout involves expanding our internal design team capacity. We have a fantastic opportunity for a middleweight graphic designer to become an essential part of the team. You’ll join our existing team of Senior Graphic Designer, Publications Manager and Photographer. You will also work closely with our digital designers to ensure continuity of our brand across our print and digital communications. You will play a key role in the design and production of all sorts of university marketing materials, where no two days are ever the same. Reporting to the Senior Designer, your graphic design skills will help customers across the University look great. You will be instrumental in developing relationships with the Colleges and Professional Services departments across the University, as well as our internal Print Services, Film Unit and Digital Communications teams.

The role is blended working between the office and home with at least two days per week (currently Monday and Tuesday) on campus. You may on occasions also be required to work on campus on other days. You will be working in the heart of the capital city of Wales at a Russell Group University that has 140 years of history and a progressive future.

The post is four days a week (28 hours per week) and open ended.

Salary: £29,762 - £34,314 per annum, pro rata (Grade 5).

Key Duties
  • To provide high quality design services that successfully support the needs of customers in terms of impact, creativity, and functionality
  • Provide professional advice on all aspects of the design process to ensure that customers make the right decisions / choices in relation to their design requirements
  • Present innovative solutions to design problems and work to enhance the visual identity of Cardiff University
  • Act as an ambassador for the Cardiff University brand. Ensure guidelines are adhered to both in the production of in-house design work and when working alongside partner organisations
  • Work closely with the Publications manager to ensure quality of design and print production
  • Constantly look to develop processes and procedures to further enhance the design service offered to customers across the University
  • Offer a ‘complete design experience’ to customers including off-line and online, social and rich media design
  • Maintain levels of quality and consistency across the institution
  • Work closely with the Digital Communications team designers, and the Campaigns team to ensure consistency of message and brand across all platforms
  • Carefully manage design requests through a robust process that provides challenge to customers in terms of meeting their desired business objectives and considers alignment with the ‘Way Forward’ strategy
  • Work closely with colleagues throughout the University in support of their requirements for design services. Offer proactive advice to help them deliver for their individual / collective projects
  • Stay abreast of developments across the design industry to ensure we utilise the latest thinking / innovation within the work of Cardiff University
  • Closely monitor the impact of design work. Use this knowledge to inform future advice to customers in terms of the most effective approach.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
1. HND/Degree level qualification in a design related field or equivalent professional experience.
2. Previous experience working in a busy design studio.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
3. Experience of delivering high quality off-line/online/social/rich media design solutions on time and to budget.
4. Experience of employing brand guidelines within your design work
5. High levels of knowledge and experience of using Adobe Creative Cloud to produce high quality artwork, plus competence in using After Effects or similar for digital/animation projects
6. Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills (both oral and written) and high levels of attention to detail/ability to proof-read.

Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
7. Ability to communicate detailed, technical and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people, demonstrating tact and diplomacy
8. Ability to deliver high levels of customer service.
9. Ability to work in isolation and flexibly as part of a dedicated team

Planning, Analysis and Problem solving
10. Evidence of ability to explore customers’ needs, obtain customer briefs and develop effective design solutions within a framework of corporate guidelines.

Desirable Criteria

1. Postgraduate/Professional qualification
2. Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
3. Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.

Additional Information

It will not normally be possible to take annual leave on undergraduate and postgraduate open days or during the confirmation and clearing period during mid-August.

About the Department
The Communications and Marketing Department is responsible for the University’s reputation and branding as well as UK/International student recruitment operations. It covers six areas: communications, marketing, student recruitment, digital communications, international and public affairs.

Communications plays an important part in building and maintaining the reputation of the University through effective communication to the public and to external and internal stakeholders. It communicates the achievements and aspirations of the University through a variety of media and includes a film unit. The team represents the University on a corporate level.

Digital Communications is responsible for the design, development and content of the external website and the intranet.

Marketing is responsible for developing a strong brand identity for the University at the corporate level, with an emphasis on better visual branding and market research.

Student recruitment plays an important role in attracting the University's undergraduate and postgraduate students from throughout the UK and Internationally, working in partnership with the University’s colleges and academic schools to recruit higher calibre students. The team also manages the University’s widening participation programmes and the School’s Partnership Project.

The International Office drives the University’s international recruitment strategy and advises on all areas related to international recruitment and development.

Public affairs leads on stakeholder relationships locally, nationally and internationally.
