Basic Function:
The work involves responsibility to design and execute visual graphics and artwork for use in publications, web design and display materials using manual and micro-computer assisted design techniques. The work is performed under general supervision of a supervisor with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in planning the various graphics methods used. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class. Does related work as required.
Qualifications:
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited two-year college with an Associate’s degree in commercial art, graphic art or related field and two (2) years of experience in commercial art or graphic art design; OR,
B. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of experience in commercial art or graphic art design.
Vacancies are filled by certified list provided by Albany County Civil Service. Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law and the Civil Service Rules for Albany County to obtain a permanent appointment.
Responsibilities:
1. Designs graphic arts and materials using desktop publishing software, databases, or other computer applications.
2. Prepares graphs, charts and illustrations for a variety of technical and non-technical publications.
3. Adapts and develops rough notes and sketches into professional quality charts, posters and graphs prepared by desktop publishing applications for use in printed publications and presentations.
4. Designs and creates manual graphics and artwork for brochures, signs, posters and graphs used in publications or other presentations.
5. May illustrate maps, charts and graphs by using felt tip, india ink and colored paper overlays.
6. May do free-hand lettering of posters, flip charts, transparencies and other graphics materials.
7. May illustrates a variety of departmental reports, publications, informational and promotional booklets, pamphlets and administrative or statistical reports.
8. May use a variety of graphics illustrative techniques involving micro-computer software, paste-ups, pen and ink, pastel chalks and air brush work.
9. Designs and drafts logos, letterheads and envelopes for various departments.
10. May crop, size and retouch photographs for use on covers, or in text of reports and illustrations.
11. Assists in selecting colors, stock and bindings for a variety or graphics reproduction projects.
12. Works with printer to ensure correctness and quality of jobs.
13. Good knowledge of art media and graphic techniques.
14. Good knowledge of the tools, terminology and equipment used in the preparation of graphics and artwork.
15. Ability to plan, design and prepare attractive graphics and illustrative materials.
16. Ability to translate ideas into finished art products.
17. Ability to use manual and computer assisted design techniques in preparation of visuals.
18. Ability to follow oral and written directions.
19. Good motor, and hand and eye coordination.
20. Artistic and creative ability.
21. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Starting Salary:
$49,886 prorated to amount of service rendered
