Graduate Sustainability and Carbon Researcher (6-9 months)

The Sustainability Laboratory (SUSL), is part of Hitachi’s European R&D Centre, located in central London. The SUSL team has a mission to be at the forefront of Hitachi’s activities as we evolve as climate change innovators.
The team creates, analyses, and develops innovations in the energy, environment, and sustainability sectors, leveraging Hitachi’s technologies and customer co-creation. The focus is across the broad European energy (power systems and renewables), environment (carbon mitigation and nature-based solutions), and sustainability (carbon management and circular economy) sectors to enable digital and physical solutions. As part of Hitachi's Global R&D Group, the SUSL team also works and co-creates with other European laboratories covering Automotive, Industry, Data and Service Design, and several innovation research laboratories in Japan and around the globe.
Hitachi were principal partners of COP26 where we demonstrated our global commitment to being climate change innovators. The Sustainability Lab and European R&D centre were a key part of our COP26 activities and technology showcasing.
We have a new opportunity in the SUSL team for a Graduate Sustainability and Carbon Researcher to participate in the design of Hitachi European R&D products and benchmark products helping to translate business requirements and partner and customer feedback into product features and functionality.
In this position, you will work closely with both the development team and product manager to define product features that deliver customer value and support product strategy and participate in related research and prioritization of new features and functionality.
The successful candidate will need to be highly motivated with a strong techno-economic background, coupled with a demonstrable appetite for creativity, business innovation and application of entrepreneurial experience.
Hitachi’s European R&D Sustainability Lab focuses on assessing and developing new and innovative business opportunities for Hitachi’s technologies. Therefore, a technical background is essential with strong commercial capabilities.
You will gain an understanding and appreciation of policy, regulation and government bodies is important to understand how technologies and solutions would fit within and engage as part of a wider society and ecosystem.
Projects will typically involve various stages from creation, through development to delivery and reporting. The candidate will be working with both internal and external global stakeholders, therefore experience of in working in diverse teams and demonstrated strong interpersonal skills will be beneficial.
This is a mixed remote position where you’d have to come into the office once or twice a month.
What You’ll Do
- Sustainability Research to help develop the benchmarking product
- Work with the software development team to design the product, help producing material.
- Help setting up partnerships with business units within the HITACHI family.
- Support Hitachi Business Units with market investigations and future scenario development of specific issues in the EU market, providing technical and economic input.
- Work closely with the product management and sustainability team.
What Makes You a Great Fit
- Academy background in a discipline with exposure to sustainability and energy.
- Understanding software development projects.
- Understanding of the UK/European energy markets and carbon offset markets and/ s knowledge of a broad range of the low carbon energy/sustainability markets.
- Basic knowledge of optimisation algorithms and coding capabilities (preferably Python) is desirable
- Understanding of UK and European taxonomy is a plus.
