Role: Graduate or Urban Designer/Masterplanner (Full time, Permanent - flexible)
Location: Manchester (hybrid working offered)

The opportunity
Following continuous success, we are looking to strengthen our current design team by recruiting an Urban Design Graduate or Urban Designer for our Manchester office to support with medium and large scale residential and mixed-use development masterplans and layouts in the Scottish and North of England markets. Our busy and successful Manchester office is made up of 14 people specialising in Town Planning and Urban Design. The office is located in Tower 12 and benefits from an open plan, friendly and sociable atmosphere.
This is an exciting and unique opportunity to be involved in high profile residential projects and to develop your skills whilst working in a multi-disciplinary and supportive team environment. Ideally you will have some proven professional experience in a design role and will be fully AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite and Sketchup fluent. You will be technically proficient, enthusiastic and understand place making.
About you
To have an impact in the role you will be:
- Working predominantly on medium and large scale residential and mixed-use masterplans and housing layouts
- Contributing to the design process by producing masterplans, diagrams and documents
- Conduct site, context and character appraisals to inform the design for new developments.
- Develop exciting and deliverable visions for new settlements and extensions to existing towns.
- Work up masterplan drawings, design strategies and detailed illustrations to support design principles.
- Assist with producing indicative layouts for either parts of or whole developments.
- Assist with producing urban design concepts supported by well-considered design rationales that take account of technical constraints.
- Colour drawings by hand or using design software.
- Support the production/testing of concepts for the arrangement of land uses on site.
- Support the production of comprehensive design and access statements comprising of written and graphic outputs, taking responsibility for, and delivering information packages including reports.
- Assist with producing comprehensive Design Codes.
- Work alongside local communities and other stakeholders through collaborative design workshops and public exhibitions.
- Have an interest in networking opportunities and a willingness to develop good business development skills.
- Liaise with other technical professionals to ensure technical deliverability of projects.
- Produce outstanding work to a specific brief and within tight deadlines; and
- Contribute to the design process through creative thinking and concept development.
To succeed in the role, you will:
- Experience of or an interest in working on large scale UK residential and mixed-use development masterplans, including new settlements and urban extensions in an Urban Design or Masterplanning role.
- Familiarity with housing layouts and an awareness of Planning issues and Local Authority design standards in layouts
- Either an MA or Postgraduate Diploma in Urban Design and a genuine enthusiasm for creating new high quality and sustainable communities.
- Some experience within an Urban Design or Masterplanning role in a consultancy environment.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Excellent communication skills, written and oral, with good attention to detail.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup and Microsoft Packages (Revit would be beneficial)
- The ability to produce high quality hand drawings.
- Excellent team working skills.
- The ability to work independently, managing your own time and workload to meet deadlines.
- Ideally hold a full UK driving licence and have access to a car
