The Project Engineering Group is part of the Applied Science Division based at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) near Oxford.

The Project Engineering Group provides mechanical engineering and project management to a wide range of challenging projects within the experimental facilities that STFC operates and external collaborations including ISIS, Diamond Light Source, CERN, Central Laser Facility, Particle Physics Department (PPD) and RAL Space.

The group delivers project management, design, manufacture, procurement, assembly, installation, integration, and commissioning of complex mechanical systems in support of these national and international scientific research projects.

Summary of key duties and responsibilities:

  • Work with, and understand the requirements of projects set by the customers.
  • Produce designs and concepts through the use of 2D & 3D CAD systems.
  • Produce FEA analyses/calculations to validate designs.
  • Work with Scientists to develop novel technological solutions
  • Take on ownership and management of project delivery of work packages with support from more experienced colleagues
  • Procure manufactured items and bought out components.
  • Oversee the installation and commissioning of novel scientific equipment

In order to apply for the role we are looking for the following:

Essential

  • You’ll need to have, or be on course to achieve, a minimum 2:1 degree, in a relevant field of study
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK at time of starting employment
  • Proven ability in design using 3D CAD
  • Able to show clear understanding with worked examples of finite element methods
  • Strong understanding of methods of heat transfer
  • Demonstrate innovative thinking in design with a clear understanding of implications of choices
  • Appreciation of manufacturing methods
  • Understanding of project management methods and their application
