When you join us, you will connect and collaborate with a global network of experts – planners, designers, engineers, scientists, consultants, program and construction managers – leading the change toward a more sustainable and equitable future. Join us and let’s get started.
AECOM is one of the world’s largest professional engineering consultancies, bringing a comprehensive portfolio of building services and engineering skills to projects encompassing all types of building and use from World Class Sporting Venues through to Commercial Properties, Healthcare & Research, Hotels, Industrial & Manufacturing, and Infrastructure both in the UK and increasingly overseas.
Building Services Electrical Engineers work closely with the design team to ensure the projects we create together sustainably perform to the brief and budget. Increasingly we work with our other internal business lines such as Architecture, Environment, Transportation, and our own Project Managers to provide a one stop solution to our clients. If you can bring passion and flair to our work, have a real interest in improving the built environment and want to now apply your engineering skills to the real world then we want to hear from you.
We deliver expert thinking to drive efficient solutions for all aspects of Building Services Electrical Engineering including high and low voltage power supplies and distribution systems, incoming utilities, standby generation, UPS and resilient power solutions, renewable systems, power, lighting, fire alarms and security.
As part of an international company, you will have the opportunity to make connections regionally, nationally and internationally and the range of projects and opportunities is broad.
Examples of projects the Scotland MEP/Building Services team are currently involved in include:
Queens Medical Research Institute - University of Edinburgh, Neurodevelopment and degenerative neuroscience
A 1600m² alteration of the existing QMRI building to incorporate Neurodevelopment and degenerative neuroscience research. The design has taken into account the specific Health & Safety and BioSecurity requirements for working with animals, specifically the control of animal allergens through the ventilation design, use of specialist equipment and providing the necessary infrastructure to allow the changing regimes for researchers. In addition, cleaning, acoustics, space planning to provide flexibility and future-proofing have been key considerations. MEP strategy and resilience has been a key factor in the project, with specific challenges in understanding the existing building’s critical and operational processes that must be maintained during the works or carefully isolated through controlled shut down or provision of temporary servicing. The CRIC and Zebra Fish facilities within the building are key examples, where uncontrolled loss of servicing would be catastrophic to the ongoing work and research. Understanding the existing operations and load characteristics is also key when establishing spare capacity or how best to expand systems, particularly in relation to essential and non-essential supplies in a heavily loaded system with limited resilience, or where the new facilities require additional ventilation capacity.
UoG Veterinary Post Mortem Facility
AECOM are providing building services as well as other discipline serves for this new build facility for the University of Glasgow. This facility is critical in providing future training to veterinary students as well as supporting the local industry with post mortem investigations. Currently at RIBA Stage 3 of design the building includes cold rooms, teaching labs, and support areas. A key aspect of this design given the high plant loads of the cooling systems is to find system efficiencies elsewhere to ensure the building as a whole can achieve high sustainability targets.
North East Health Hub
Currently in the construction phase, AECOM have provided full design service for building services of this 11000m2 health facility, the largest of its kind in Scotland. This will be the first fully “electrified” building with no fossil fuels, and therefore make it operationally zero-carbon on decarbonization of the gird. The building comprises Air Source Heat Pumps and PV.
SAXAVord – Shetland Space Centre
This exciting project located at the furthest north point of the Shetland Isles will be the first vertical launch facility in the UK. A key part of this project is clearly defining the requirement of the client equipment, working with rocket developers to understand cleanliness, temperature, and safety requirements of the assembly buildings. The site when complete will include 3 launch pads, 3 assembly hangars, cleanrooms, fuel storage, and launch support buildings.
Global Cold Store Logistics
AECOM have an established relationship with an advanced cold food storage and distribution logistics company who are growing their company to a global scale. They are a small team who have a wealth of knowledge in their product. They came to AECOM as we were able to take responsibility for developing a globalisation strategy. With our expertise in this area we were able to produce a standardisation document which became their international best practice design guide. This document has evolved, learning from lessons on past projects and has become their key document for every proposal in every country they are looking to set up in.
Healthcare: Aecom are a leading award winning consultant for the NHS in the UK and internationally. Our breadth and depth stretches from £200m+ acute hospitals to health& wellbeing primary care facilities and refurbishment works across the healthcare estate. We are proud to have contributed to the recent COVID Nightingale facilities and to be active contributors to the strategies for the NHS to deliver their Net Zero Carbon ambitions.
When a graduate starts with us we pair them with an experienced engineer who will guide and mentor them through their initial period working on live projects. The following description lists a fairly typical approach to foundational training in your discipline; however, business needs, project task availability, and your training interests will also influence the scope and order of training. - Design experience in the electrical engineering aspects of project delivery.
- Application of electrical engineering to support sustainable building design
- Delivery of projects using BIMAutoCad and REVIT
- Calculations including electrical load, circuit design and cable calculations, and lighting
- How to use the Technical Practice Network
- Learning to navigate through codes and guidelines
- Complete our Safety Training
- AECOM standards and symbols
Job Responsibilities:
- Technical design of all electrical engineering aspects of projects
- System load calculations to enable central and secondary plant to be accurately sized
- Ensuring plantrooms and distribution routes are adequately sizedReport writing for the appropriate design stage
- Compiling technical specifications appropriate for the system components selected
- Determining the best technical solution and evidencing reasoning
- Attending meetings and workshops, learning from listening, asking questions and discussion
- Working with people from other disciplines to gain knowledge on new subjects
- Assisting in developing our designs through the different stages
- Inspecting and monitoring installations during the construction and commissioning phases
- Taking on more responsibility in managing our projects from inception through to completion as the graduate role develops
- An accredited Bachelor degree (min 2:1 or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Architectural Environment Engineering or similar, with honors. Accreditation being with CIBSE or IET.
