Northerns Graduate Management Scheme is a 24 month programme, designed to give you a unique insight into the Rail industry. During the programme you will work predominantly across one business function, but also get the opportunity to expand your knowledge and skills in other business functions too. The scheme will give you the change to gain highly valuable work experience and lifelong skills – helping you work towards becoming a great leader of the future.
You will have a unique chance to become a valued contributor to the business and its continued growth and development; as well as gain a strong understanding of the Rail industry. As part of the scheme, you’ll also be onboarded onto a Management course; so not only will you have on the job experience and working on various workplace project, you’ll also obtain a qualification in Management.
About the Placement
The placement will work across two key areas within the finance function – working with IS to support with Cyber Security and the Business Insights team to help the business utilise data more effectively to drive business decisions and efficiency.
Business Insights – You will be involved with:
- Building dashboards in Tableau to visualise data
- Supporting with data processing
- Designing surveys to collect data
- Engaging with stakeholders to understand data requirements
- Supporting Tableau users across the business
You’ll also get the opportunity to be involved in specific projects such as:
- Automating the productions of traincrew utilisation and advanced forecast reports – aimed to deliver time saving benefits of 4 hours per day and provide insight to improve on-the-day traincrew planning to reduce the likelihood of delays and cancellations
- Producing visualisations to monitor train delay and cancellations to drive decisions to improve performance.
- Improving Safety of the Line incident data collection process, to make it more efficient and allow for better understanding of incident causes to drive decisions to reduce them.
Cyber Security - You will be involved in:
- Understanding different ways of working at Northern and defining & producing ways of improving security education/awareness across the business.
- Ensuring security requirements are understood and implemented in IT projects.
- Exposure to the Onboards Systems team and understanding how security is addressed in operational technologies (as well as day-to-day IT systems).
- Developing and producing reporting that shows the improvements being made by the Security team.
- Reviewing the suppliers we use, how we use them, the systems they provide, mapping what these systems do and how they use data or connect to Northern to asses the risk they pose.
- Working with IT to look into the system/network vulnerabilities/weaknesses and how we might address them.
- Reviewing the current events in the industry and wider economy to assess the threat levels to Northern and if we need to take any additional actions.
About You
You’ll have an interest in cyber security, with an understanding of analysing data and producing your findings. As an ambitious and highly motivated individual, you have an appetite to learn and capacity to take ownership of everything you do. You’ll demonstrate the ability to be innovative and seek ways to improve what you do and how it’s done. With your excellent written and verbal communications skills, you’ll have the ability to effortless communicate with a wide variety of people. You should also be able to demonstrate the following:
- Some experience of data analysis and processing
- Be driven; demonstrating determination to succeed.
- A passion for building relationships with a wide variety of people from all varying levels.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- A global attitude for working in a multi-cultural environment.
- Have a high performance and achievement mentality; whilst also being creative and innovative.
- Step up when the challenges arise; show a desire for taking on responsibility.
- Be able to use MS Office.
- Some experience of using Tableau and Alteryx is desirable but not essential.
- Some experience of manipulating datasets and producing visualisations is desirable.
It is also essential that you have:
- Completed a 2:1 or higher Bachelor's degree or Master’s degree.
- Must have studied at a University in the North of England or live in the North of England.
