We are looking for a Graduate Computer Vision Engineer to join our Perception team!

Location: Bristol, UK - due to the nature of this role you would be expected to work from our amazing central Bristol office 5 days per week


Contract: Permanent, full time


Salary: Highly competitive graduate salary, with staged increases at 6 month intervals

This role is for a Computer Vision Engineer to work on research and development for our current and future products using subsea robotics and cloud platforms. This role is ideally suited to someone who is passionate about using computer vision to solve real world problems and turning those solutions into products. Together we can work towards building a future with clean, renewable energy maintained by efficient and novel inspection technologies.

At Vaarst you will

  • Work on algorithms at the cutting edge of computer vision research
  • Learn about underwater vision and sensor systems used by subsea robotics for inspection of infrastructure for the offshore renewables industry
  • Develop interesting novel solutions to practical problems
  • Collaborate in an environment of experts in different fields working together to solve challenges from industry.

Responsibilities

  • Performing research, staying up to date with the state of the art including investigating open source projects and off the shelf solutions
  • Generating, developing and evaluating novel solutions to problems, contributing ideas
  • Converting product requirements into actionable work
  • Working with marine sensors (visual and non-visual) and writing code to drive those sensors, acquire data and analyse it
  • Implementing code and seeing it through into production
  • Writing documentation and unit tests
  • Taking part in onshore trials; optionally also offshore trials

About you & what you will bring

  • Experience in implementing computer vision algorithms
  • Proficiency in modern C++ and at least one scripting language
  • Good understanding of camera fundamentals such as sensors and lenses
  • Good understanding of 3D vision, reconstruction, feature detection and feature tracking
  • Understanding of Machine Learning fundamentals
  • Experience of vision and image processing frameworks such as OpenCV
  • Well versed in Linux and shell scripting

Additional experience (desirable but not essential)

  • Familiarity with SLAM or Structure from Motion techniques
  • Experience of any of
    • Docker, ROS, git, gstreamer
    • Tone mapping, super-resolution, object detection or object classification
    • Using CNNs
    • ML frameworks
    • Hands on experience of ML ops
  • Interest in autonomous robotics

  • CCAT Assessment – The Cognitive Criteria Aptitude test will include questions on verbal, numerical and spatial reasoning.
  • A short 30-minute phone screen with our People Team. We will tell you more about our role, the team and business, and allow us to learn more about you, why you applied, and what you can bring to Vaarst. You’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you have.
  • A 1 hour interview with our Computer Vision Lead and another member of the team. This part of the process allows you to get a real feel for the work the team is doing and allows us to learn more about your skillsets. In the interview, we will talk about your previous experience in quality and testing. We’ll ask some questions around technologies we use, key skills for the role, and what we look for in a team member. Again, you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions you have.
  • A 30-minute follow-up with our CTO to check in with you and get your thoughts on whether the role is for you, answer any of your questions that may have come up throughout the process, and clarify expectations
  • Offer! If you are successful in the process, we will follow up with an offer for the role.
