These are rare opportunities to join our Global Energy Management (GEM) business within ScottishPower. GEM is a global business responsible for managing the commodity market exposures of the ScottishPower portfolio, through wholesale trading strategies in energy products and related markets. It is a global activity with the main goal of optimising energy margins and minimising risk from wholesale market exposures.

Market Analyst – Forward Trading Team
Working within the Forward Trading Team, part of the wider Portfolio, Optimisation, Trading and Structuring department, you’ll collaborate with your colleagues on optimising the overall position of the ScottishPower Retail and Renewables businesses, including gas storage, The Forward Trading Team ultimately enables the businesses to make better trading decisions through analysis of the drivers of the UK and global electricity and gas markets.
In this role, you’ll be conducting detailed market analysis on the UK and global energy market, which will allow you to cultivate your commerciality skills whilst truly influencing commercial decisions and trading strategies for renewable energy sales and gas storage assets to maximise income – all within a global organisation. This will involve optimising the procurement of energy to meet retail demand for 5m retail services, 20TWh electricity demand and 25TWh of gas demand as well as supporting trading critical to the efficient optimisation of 3GW of on shore and offshore wind generation producing 8TWh. and an opportunity to influence our growth plans for further renewable generation and green hydrogen assets in a part of the company with a £8bn turnover and challenging commercial targets.
Through your programme, you’ll develop knowledge and understanding of SP’s portfolio, the commodity markets and the wider SP businesses. You’ll also develop an understanding of energy economics and power & gas markets. And throughout your time on the graduate programme, you’ll learn to produce a range of management reports to help drive decisions on adding value or reducing risk
Commercial Energy Analysts – Operational Trading Team
As a key member of the Operational Trading Analytical Team, you’ll gain exceptional commercial, analytical and data handling skills as you learn to analyse the UK energy market. All of this will enable you to work alongside your colleagues to optimise the short term position of the Retail and Renewables businesses. You will operate across multiple energy markets and manage relationships with the operators of the UK Transmission and Distribution networks,
Day to day, you will analyse and develop trading strategies for renewable energy and storage assets, to maximise income from wholesale and balancing services markets. You’ll also analyse Renewable generation ancillary service markets; and produce performance reports for UK wind and battery assets. You will be working with highly complex optimisation software and have the opportunity to drive the development of state of the art Machine Learning decision support tools. Your input will be key to optimisation decisions.
You’ll learn to produce a range of management reports on key performance indicators, which will include benchmarking of operational trading activities against key competitors and analysis of the financial impact on earnings of unplanned outages. All this will be done as part of a team which is responsible for delivering Balancing Services in a market worth over £4bn/year.
Analyst - Valuation & Analysis Team
The Valuation & Analysis team is the analytical hub of GEM. By joining the team, you’ll support the evaluation and communication of business performance relating to commercial endeavours to add value to the wider business. Specifically, you will provide clear and concise information on business performance, which will assist decision-making in GEM and within ScottishPower Senior Management.
You’ll use your exceptional attention to detail to provide accurate and robust analytical support and wholesale market expertise. You’ll be responsible for the Daily Price Feed process, ensuring validation by Risk Management is achieved and prices are loaded. During your placement, you’ll gain in depth insights and expertise which you’ll use to ensure optimal prices are used, investigating and implementing alternative price sources and shaping methodologies to ensure quality and robustness of price data. You’ll monitor movements in the daily commodity market prices impacting our Retail and Renewable businesses. You’ll be responsible for the calculation of the GEM view of Energy Margins, providing official data submissions as part of the Control Budget/Rev process, collating the information from across teams in GEM and providing financial explanations. To do this, you’ll regularly calculate and analyse Retail Energy Costs and Wind Energy Margins, and you’ll track the performance of GEM value initiatives. You’ll monitor market conditions and actively anticipate future impacts, while providing a concise explanation of margin movements including through the creation of supporting information packs.
All of this supporting a Renewables portfolio of c.2GW renewable onshore wind producing c.5 TWh of electricity and c.1GW renewable offshore wind producing c.3 TWh of electricity annually, as well as activities to procure commodities for our Retail portfolio of 20 TWh of electricity and 25 TWh of gas each year.
