Binscombe Medical Centre is looking for a GP Assistant to join our team.
CQC rated “Outstanding”, we are a 7 GP partner and 1 Nurse partner practice, supported by a team of four salaried GP’s, plus a team of 3 practice nurses and 3 health care assistants. We are a friendly and supportive practice providing GP services to over 11,000 patients.
We are looking to recruit a GP Assistant to work at least 25 hours per week and would also consider applications from candidates looking for full-time work.
As a GP Assistant, you will be working in the medical practice providing support to General Practitioners (GPs) and other healthcare professionals. Your role will involve a range of administrative and clinical duties to ensure the smooth running of the practice and the delivery of high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide administrative support to GPs, including managing & arranging appointments, answering telephone queries, and maintaining patient records
- Undertake simple clinical observations/investigations, such as taking patient histories, conducting initial assessments, and assisting with minor procedures under the supervision of a GP
- Conduct routine health checks, including monitoring patients' vital signs and recording medical information
- Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs and phlebotomy
- Assist with the coordination of healthcare services, including arranging referrals to specialists, ordering tests and investigations, and arranging follow-up appointments
- Ensure that the practice is clean, tidy, and well organised, including monitoring and ordering clinical supplies and equipment
- Provide support to patients and their families, including responding to queries, providing health advice, and signposting to relevant healthcare services
- Explaining treatment procedures to patients
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in accordance with practice protocols and legal requirements
- Complete basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc;
- Sort clinical post and prioritise for the GP. Signpost some post to other members of staff; and extract information from clinical letters that needs coding; adding this to patient notes
- Support with QOF reviews
GP Assistants should also:
- Participate in an annual individual performance review.
- Track and record evidence of their experience against the national competency framework.
- Inform the lead GP of any concerns regarding their role and request professional development as needed
Qualifications and Experience:
- Educated to GCSE level with a minimum grade C (or equivalent) in Maths and English
- Experience working in a healthcare setting, preferably in a GP practice or primary care setting
- Knowledge of medical terminology and clinical procedures
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Strong organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
- Good IT skills, with experience using clinical information systems and electronic health records.
- A commitment to providing high-quality patient care and promoting health and wellbeing.
