Job description
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

We are looking for a geomorphologist to join our Fisheries, Biodiversity & Geomorphology team, working across Yorkshire Area. You will provide advice to operational staff working at an area level to help us protect, restore and enhance the natural environment.

You will work closely with our Geomorphology Technical Specialist to provide advice, guidance and technical support to colleagues to deliver improvements to the ecological status of our rivers, lakes, estuaries and coastal waters, in line with the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD).

You will proactively engage staff across the business and will help identify, design and deliver a programme of mitigation and restoration activities in surface waters. Your work with operational staff will ensure that we prevent or minimise geomorphological impacts arising from our own activities and those of third parties that we regulate. You will influence customers and build strong partnerships internally and externally to collaboratively achieve our goals.
You will keep up to date on changing legislation and best practice, in order to inform internal priorities and direction.
The role has a strong practical focus, involving regular site visits with colleagues to provide geomorphological advice.
The team
You will join a vibrant team of ecologists and fisheries experts within our Yorkshire team. You will work closely with our Geomorphology Technical Specialist and will be required to work with geomorphologists from our national team and other Areas to;
  • provide practical support to colleagues on geomorphological issues, assessment techniques and monitoring requirements;
  • develop working instructions, guidance, good practice and tools to deliver environmental improvements;
  • help inform Government policy on the environment
Experience/skills required
You will need a relevant degree with a geomorphology or related geoscience component. You’ll know what geomorphology is and why it matters. You may also have relevant practical experience.

You will have awareness of the requirements of WFD, particularly the hydromorphology element, as well as its practical implications for the work the Environment Agency does.

You will have good communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to influence and deliver results through others.

You will be well-organised and have the confidence to work independently on your own initiative and to help coach others to improve their capabilities in geomorphology.

You must have a full driving licence.
Contact and additional information
Although this post is office based there will be a requirement to undertake site visits and fieldwork to help resolve specific issues that arise. There will be some travel to other Environment Agency office locations, and attendance at national and area meetings, as necessary.
