RZSS - Edinburgh Zoo
The role
To undertake genetic and genomic work, preparing and analysing DNA and contributing to the day to day running of the RZSS WildGenes laboratory facility. As a member of the Conservation department, the post holder will contribute to the development of RZSS in achieving its mission and aims.
Some of the things you’ll do:
- Undertake DNA extraction, amplification, analysis and archiving of samples
- Assist and support the running of the WildGenes lab, and to maintain day to day operations
- Troubleshoot and optimise procedures and produce protocols as required
- Contribute to the development of new and/or improved practices/methods/systems/ techniques
- Placing and processing of orders for lab consumables and maintaining up to date pricing lists
- Responsible for training placement and PhD students and visitors in routine laboratory techniques and coordinating their day-to-day work schedules
- Work independently to manage given projects to agreed time frames with support from the Senior laboratory technician.
What we’re looking for:
- BSc in relevant scientific discipline or hold equivalent relevant experience in a biological, biochemical, or environmental science
- Knowledge of standard molecular genetic laboratory techniques
- Good communication skills for training visiting researchers/students
- Experience of working in a molecular genetics laboratory
- Experience of PCR based molecular genetic methods
