The philosophy of the department is to provide a comprehensive, modern Radiology service and includes CT, MRI, plain Radiography, Ultrasound and basic interventional procedures with the best Radiographers.
You will perform a wide range of diagnostic radiographic procedures as required throughout the Department, managing patient priority as appropriate. Alsoparticipate in the weekend sessions/bank holiday/out of hours Radiographic rota under supervision, to contribute effectively to the delivery of an effective and responsive Radiology Service.

Communication and Relationships
To liaise with referral sources where clarification is required for most clinically appropriate imaging.
To assess specific communication needs of individual patients.
To communicate effectively with patients prior to, during and after an examination.
To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and relatives of patients and their escorts prior to, during and after their examinations.
To ensure that urgent findings are communicated and patients are directed accordingly.
To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians.
To effectively liaise with all disciplines of staff within the Radiology Department giving support and advice where necessary.
To communicate negotiated changes to staff rotas to Superintendent Radiographers.
To carry and respond to air-call bleep when necessary.
To reflect on systems of work and communicate areas of deficit or potential advancement.
Identify and use the most effective means of communication, appropriate to the situation and individuals involved.
To be motivated to work together with others and in a variety of different team settings.
Analysis and Judgement
To assess the clinical justification of radiography referrals in line with both national regulations IRMER (2017) and local protocols.
To acquire diagnostic images and physically position the full range of patient presentations accurately for examinations taking into account patient limitations and adapting standard techniques where necessary.
To review images and ensure that supplementary imaging procedures/views are considered prior to patient departure from the Department.
To undertake other duties as and when required by the demands of the service or the Head of Diagnostic Imaging.
To adapt and quickly respond to changes in service, patient or departmental needs.
To ensure that equipment faults are recorded and appropriately reported to the relevant Superintendent Radiographer.
To report clinical, non-clinical and radiation incidents in line with the Trust’s and departmental risk management.
Planning and Organising
To organise workload in line with clinical priorities.
To attend departmental meetings where requested.
To attend Quality Assurance meetings as required.
To prepare/present short presentations or lectures for staff and participate in the CPD programme for all staff.
Plan, organise, prioritise and control work, ensuring effective use of time, money and resources.
Facilitate and contribute to meetings effectively, so that the purpose of the meeting can be achieved.
Patient and Client Care
To act with delegated authority as practitioner for radiography referrals.
To act as an operator under IRMER (2017)
To act as point of advice for imaging referrals.
To act as patient advocate in radiation protection issues.
To ensure patients have agreed to exposure to ionising radiation prior to the examination.
To ascertain from the patient, patient’s guardian or the referrer the patient’s suitability for receipt of intravenous contrast media.
To participate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the Department and hospital respectively, using manual handling guidelines and risk assessment.
To comprehend and adhere to all Health and Safety and COSHH regulations.
To abide by National Regulations regarding Radiation usage e.g. IRMER (2017) and IRR17.
To conform to requirements laid down by Professional Regulatory Bodies e.g. HCPC and SOR.
To carry out all responsibilities with regard to the Trust’s equal opportunities policy.
Service and Policy Development
To participate in equipment testing and reject analysis, ensuring all results are documented and recorded.
To conduct examinations according to protocol for a range of clinical trials.

To review and comment on continuing appropriateness of imaging protocols. To ensure all appropriate infection control measures are utilised where necessary. Paying particular attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linens.

To work with a range of students and assistant staff in both the delivery of the service and their individual development needs.
To encourage the highest professional and technical standards in all staff using personal example and constructive supervision.
To assist in the supervision and clinical instruction of both undergraduate and postgraduate radiographic staff.
To participate in the academic programme of the department, as required.
To provide elements of Induction training for other staff.

Information System Use and Management
To ensure that images are available on PACS network in a timely and accurate manner.
To monitor and report deficits in the data integrity of the information systems in use in the Department.
Be familiar with the range of technical applications available on Imaging Department.
To enter accurate data to RIS ensuring patient confidentiality. All users are governed by the Data Protection Act (1984). Unauthorised disclosure of such information is regarded as gross misconduct and could result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal.
Involvement in Surveys and Research
To actively participate in the technical and patient focussed aspects of the Department’s Audit Programme.
Freedom to Act and Autonomy
This role is required to work with standard procedures and on occasion is required to review national policies and provide guidance to the Trust on how these should be implemented locally.
