Gardener Job Scottish Highlands
Greycoat Lumley's client are seeking a knowledgeable and committed Gardener to work with the owners to lead the restoration and development of a once great garden on the West Coast of Scotland.
Planted from the 1860’s onwards, the garden is currently 20 acres of as yet uncatalogued abundant mature trees, Rhododendrons Azaleas, Magnolias and similar ericaceous species and cultivars. Maintained to a high standard until the early part of this century, it is disappearing under bracken, brambles and self-sown trees.
The role is to plan and manage this restoration with the help of a Groundsman and possibly one other plus a keen but not always present owner.
Suitable Gardeners will be a zealous, knowledgeable plantsperson who is undeterred from working solo much of the time, leading others but also very hands on in all the hard work of weeding, planting, composting, propagation, monitoring plant welfare, chain saw work and vegetable growing amongst other things.
Able to balance a sense of ownership of the garden with the owners’ actual ownership and personal preferences.
Personal resourcefulness and resilience in a remote coastal location albeit with a vibrant local and seasonal busy tourist community.
The Gardener must have excellent communication skills with the ability take on feedback.
Experience Required:
Horticultural education to a high standard probably at more than one of the major RHS or other significant gardens followed by experience as a team member in a private context.
Deep knowledge and experience of large scale weed eradication and management, mostly using sustainable techniques
Particular interest in soil development and plant nutrition
Experience of acid soil garden(s)
Chain Saw and spraying certification
An aptitude for machine maintenance
Salary £30,000 to be discussed at interview
Accommodation: Available in one of several one and two bedroom cottages in the grounds. Bills not included. Pets welcome within reason
