Gardener

We are starting to look for a qualified and/or experienced gardener to join our team on a schedule that suits you in the new year.

We have a large and growing portfolio of gardens and businesses that require their outdoor spaces maintaining – grass cutting, weed killing, plant tending, new planting schemes, soft & hard landscaping and generally all other outdoor maintenance services associated with grounds & gardens maintenance. We also offer some minor hard landscaping aspects, such as sleeper raised bed building, dry stone walling, small areas of paving, small fencing projects and mowing strip installations, to give some indicative examples.

We are currently looking for the right candidate to fulfil the position of Gardener, and there is scope to move into a team leader role, possibly moving into a line manager or operations manager position as the company continues to expand.

The successful candidate will assist with the upkeep and maintenance of all related kit and may be asked to assist with other smaller ad-hoc tasks that invariably pop up within a small business environment.

Prospective candidates will be first offered a tryout day/s to ensure good fit within the team - this day's work will be paid at £11.00/hr and will most likely be in the Sheffield area.

Roles and Responsibilities.

  • Assist with the presentation of gardens and grounds to the highest standard at all times.
  • Assist with any restoration and development projects within gardens as required.
  • General garden work such as mowing, strimming, weeding, pruning and scrub control as well as planting, propagation and border maintenance.
  • Hard Landscaping projects such as patio repair and maintenance, raised bed creation, retaining walls and other minor construction work as required.
  • Assist in the day-to-day upkeep and maintenance of all garden machinery and equipment.
  • Assist with the application and storage of all chemicals used in the gardens.
  • At times the job holder is required to work in extreme weather conditions (freezing or wet and windy weather).
  • Carry out work in accordance with Health & Safety Executive (HSE) legislation and use a varied range of garden machinery in accordance with safe working practices.
  • Driving (company van) to multiple gardens and grounds throughout the working day, engaging with customers and feeding back to the office.
  • Ensuring safe working practices are followed at all time.
  • Contacting customers to inform them of delays/ changes to schedule.
  • Being flexible with scheduling due to weather/ traffic/ breakdowns/ etc.

Requirements.

  • Knowledge, passion and/ or experience of gardening, undertaking typical garden tasks, common plant identification, knowledge and their care.
  • Self motivated, professional, with the ability to work well as part of a team or on their own. You will be trusted to carry out tasks using your initiative and knowledge with minimal oversight. Be able to suggest additional relevant work to customers and in their best interest.
  • Commitment to excellence, best practise & efficiency.
  • Punctuality and reliability.
  • Personable & friendly, the role requires conversing with clients & the public. You represent the company.
  • Physically able - on your feet all day and loading/ unloading the vehicles/ trailers. We strive to make reasonable accomodations in this area.
  • Clean driving license desirable, with trailer element high desirable, but not required.
  • PA1 & PA6 desirable, but not required.
  • Level two horticultural qualification or above, and/or relevant and demonstrable experiance.
  • Reliable transportation to Deepcar, Sheffield, for a 7 to 8am start (flexible).

Contract
We will work with you to be as accommodating to your needs as possible, with regards to contract length, days worked and working time. Our working day start generally varies between 7:00 and 8:00 and finishes generally between 16:00 and 17:00. Year to date average start time has been 7:58 and average finish time has been 16:48, with an hour lunch. With sufficient notice we can amend the schedule to start and be back at base at requested times.

Annualised hours contract - set monthly salary with balance adjustment throughout the year, due to the nature of our business (less hours in winter, more hours in summer).

This role is for 3 days per week, to the end of the year. There is a possibility of adding extra days and/or expanding the contract duration according to business & market conditions. For as an immediate start as possible.
