Key Responsibilities:
- Create, maintain and manage tools that inform and automate cybersecurity program functions for Friday Institute projects.
- Assist in the enhancement, expansion, and optimization of the K-12 Cybersecurity Program including, but not limited to, user education, asset discovery, checklists, plans, and templates for use by PSUs; and risk/response management.
- Assist with implementation of applicable ongoing and future NCDPI provided cybersecurity solutions selection, planning and implementation.
- Provide subject matter expertise to the K-12 Cybersecurity Program that ensures activities, solutions, and documentation align with CIS, NIST and other applicable security frameworks, controls, or other methods.
- Research, analyze and provide feedback regarding current and emerging resources that are applicable to enhancing PSU cybersecurity posture.
- Assist in developing and implementing a cybersecurity training strategy that aligns with the NC Digital Learning Plan – Data Privacy and Cybersecurity category
- Assist in developing and presenting content delivery and materials at conferences, webinars, regional events, and other meetings.
- Assist cybersecurity team to evaluate school education network architecture and cyber-security programs to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
- Assist in developing and implementing a stakeholder communication and management plans to support the cybersecurity team.
- Support cybersecurity team and program partners with vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and risk assessments to identify security risks and recommend mitigation strategies for PSUs.
- Collaborate with NCDPI and PSUs to implement security measures and ensure compliance with security policies and regulations.
- Manage security projects and initiatives from planning to implementation and ensure successful completion within the given time-frame.
- Stay current with security technologies, tools, and techniques and recommend new tools to improve the security of the PSUs.
- Other duties as assigned.
- B.S. in Computer Science with Concentration in Cybersecurity from an accredited institution
- 2+ years of experience in cybersecurity or related field
- Experience in vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and risk assessments
- Strong knowledge of security principles, best practices, and technologies
- Experience with cybersecurity services implemented in North Carolina such as KnowBe4 and run-zero
- Experience in API programming for integrations with 3rd party applications
- Strong written communication skills, especially when communicating with groups that have vastly different levels of technical competencies.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and organizational skills. Ability to comprehend complex systems and related specifications and requirements; understand and follow directions; communicate with education stakeholders.
- Strong skills in advanced Google Sheets topics including multi-variable lookups (DGET, VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, GETPIVOTDATA, and SQL-like queries). Experience with large data systems, machine learning principles is desired.
- Python programming especially with regard to using APIs from various data sources.
- Willingness to learn tangential technology topics, such as federal and state broadband policy and wireless technology so that cost/benefit analysis can be developed based on relevant data and understanding of the technology tradeoffs and options.
- One or more years of experience in research, ideally around education policy and cybersecurity
- Certifications in CISSP, Security+, or other related fields are preferred
- Familiarity with state and federal government policies and regulations is a plus
- Previous experience working with K-12 schools
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Active secret (or higher) clearance preferred
