Job description
Purpose:
You will be part of the Systems Engineering department, responsible for supporting development of Ballard hydrogen fuel-cell products through their full life cycle by following functional safety processes. You will primarily work on automotive products and develop work products against the ISO 26262 standard. Starting in the concept phase you will collaborate with the systems, electrical, control software and test and validation teams to develop vehicle hazard and risk analyses, safety goals, functional and technical safety requirements as well as ensuring robust verification and validation aligned with the V-model of systems engineering.

Responsibilities & Duties
Create functional safety goals and cascade requirements in adherence to ISO 26262
Develop safety related documentation including safety plan, safety case, item definitions, HARAs, FTAs, DFMEAs and similar
Ensure all safety related requirements are defined, complete and traceable through to verification and validation
Work with independent reviewers to audit and ensure functional safety compliance
General Duties
Undertake any other duties / tasks assigned, which may include providing support to other departments.
Suggest & Implement approved improvements to company processes.
Represent Ballard Motive Solutions in a professional manner

Person Specification
Knowledge
Essential
Working knowledge of the Systems Engineering V-model
A good understanding of electric drivetrain architectures and familiarity with different types of components such as batteries, motors, power electronics
Desirable:
Working understanding of hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric vehicles such as types of hazards
Skills & Experience
Essential
Engineering experience throughout an entire product lifecycle
Significant experience of ISO 26262 preferably within an automotive OEM or Tier 1 supplier
Good data presentation skills (reporting and documentation)
Well organised, comfortable following process and excellent attention to detail
Desirable:
Experience in other functional safety standards for non-automotive applications e.g. IEC 61508
Knowledge and experience of failure mode avoidance processes including DFMEAs and Fault Tree Analysis throughout the product engineering lifecycle, from concept to production
Experience in using requirements management systems such as DOORS or similar
Prior use of software tools designed for functional safety such as Ansys Medini Analyze
Experience assessing and understanding system models e.g. SysML or RAAML in tools such as Sparx Enterprise Architect, IBM Rhapsody
Experience in software quality and process e.g. ASPICE
Experience in developing and working to a Design Verification Plan
Qualifications
Essential:
Degree in engineering or related discipline
