TEIKYO UNIVERSITY OF JAPAN IN DURHAM wishes to recruit a full-time week-day porter.
- Rotational shift pattern (day/evening/night)
- 41.25 hours over Monday to Friday.
- Gross annual salary circa £22,694 (£10.58 per hour)
- Access to contributory pension scheme
- 24 days annual holiday.
- Reporting to the Head Porter and responsible for physical security, porter’s lodge duties, daily maintenance tasks, driving and student safety.
- Desirable qualifications: clean, current driving licence; computer literate; basic first aid qualification

JOB TITLE: WEEK-DAY /EVENING /NIGHT SHIFT PORTER – (41.25 HOURS WEEKLY: SHIFT ROTATION – 0700 – 1515; 1500 – 2315; 2300 - 0715)
WORK LOCATION: Shoichi Hall and all other Teikyo University of Japan in Durham (TUID) sites
RESPONSIBLE TO: Bursar, through the Head Porter and Utilities Manager
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible to the Head Porter and Utilities Manager for:
- Responding with urgency to all fire and medical emergencies;
- Ensuring that all noise levels (bedrooms/corridors/entrance/halls) are kept to an acceptable level in both Halls of Residence throughout each shift;
- Providing verbal warnings to any noisy students who elect to ignore the TUID rules on noise levels;
- Answering queries amicably and professionally from students, staff and members of the public, and giving assistance wherever possible, and advice as required;
- Carrying out an irregular pattern of security patrolling (internal/external) across the whole TUID estate, including regularly monitoring the CCTV security system;
- Reporting, rectifying and recording any faults noted by him/her by others, in the TUID buildings and installations and drawing these to the attention of the Head Porter prior to going off shift;
- The accurate operation of a very simple cash book for the recording and sale of stock (including signing for the petty cash box balance at the commencement and end of each shift);
- Driving the company minibuses on official journeys (mainly local) as required by the student programme;
- Actioning the daily task schedule (faults log/job sheet) in accordance with the Head Porter’s instructions;
- Recording all shift events accurately and legibly in the Porters’ Lodge diary;
- Maintaining reliable communications (telephone land-line and mobile) for on-call emergencies throughout his/her shift;
- Securing the Lafcadio Hearn Cultural Centre at the end of each working day;
- Changing to the day shift in non-term time to complete the TUID vacation works services repair programme
- Ensuring that appropriate TUID and relevant College staff are updated on all student emergencies (unless of a minor nature)
- Acting as Fire Marshal whenever the situation arises and ensuring that all residents are directed to the Fire Assembly Point (FAP)
- Checking the occupancy register for both Halls of Residence at the beginning of each shift
- Ensuring that the pantries, computer room and relaxation lounges are kept clean/tidy and used appropriately.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Flexibility: occasionally, the portering staffs are required to operate outside Durham; and to cover at intervals for staff sickness, leave
- A very positive interest in students’ welfare
- A basic knowledge of first aid
- Computer literate
- DIY skills for a diversity of domestic support tasks
