Front-end Engineer London, England

Hippo Labs
Full Time London, England 45000 - 60000 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Help us build game-changing tools for healthcare

Hippo Labs is on a mission to build the best tools to help primary care focus on caring.

Healthcare is a human right and we believe that the right technology can significantly improve outcomes for patients. With the NHS under higher pressures and demands than ever before, having access to the right tools is critical to ensuring an efficient, effective service.

Our flagship Hippo Recaller tool streamlines and automates proactive care processes so that GP Practices can focus on prevention over cure. By shifting focus and using the right tools, practices can improve health outcomes for patients and reduce their own workload. Our tool is already in use with over 150,000 patients, and we're growing rapidly.

We're looking for talented, like-minded people to join our founding team. You'll help shape the business and make a real difference to patients from day one!

Job Summary

We're looking for a top-tier front-end engineer to join our growing Engineering team doing important, impactful work in the healthcare technology space.

As a front-end engineer, you will be responsible for designing and implementing intuitive and visually appealing user interfaces for our web-based applications used on the front-line in NHS Primary Care. You will work closely with our back end engineering team to ensure a cohesive experience and be thoughtful about how we design our application to maximise user-experience.

The roles is based at our Head Office in London (SE1) with some flexibility to work from home as well. We're open to full-time, part-time or freelance candidates. Unfortunately at this time, we cannot sponsor candidates, so you must have the right to work in the UK.

The salary range for this role is £45,000 - 60,000 per annum WTE.

What the Job Involves

  • You will be responsible for developing best-in-class user interfaces. Beautiful, usable design is vital to making sure our products get traction with both patients and practices
  • As an early stage startup with a small team, we're looking for someone who can take responsibility for the full front-end development (including some basic design work)
  • We'll need you to work with us to build up a set of product requirements. We have significant industry-specific expertise and access to relevant stakeholders that will help shape these requirements
  • You'll need to create sketches / wireframes to enable you to translate those requirements into a usable product. In the future you'll be working with a UX team on this, but for now you'll need to take responsibility here
  • You'll be working closely with our CTO (Ali) and the back-end team and you'll need to work in an agile, open manner to help us create and adapt our products quickly to best serve practices and patients
  • Initially we'll look to leverage existing code libraries or themes to enable us to effectively balance cost, quality and speed. However, you'll also need to ensure that the foundations are there for an improved, custom front-end in future
  • You'll write high quality, clean, well architected code to maximise performance and build a solid base upon which we can continue to scale our products
  • We need someone who is believes strongly in good engineering practice and stays up-to-date with the latest front-end technologies and best practices
  • We're looking for someone who can start independently and as we grow, assume more of a team-based role possibly including managing other engineers.

Who we're looking for

  • Must have experience with one or preferably more of the following: Javascript, React.js, Vue.js, Svelte
  • Must have experience with Git and Cloud platforms - we use Gitlab and AWS
  • You should have 2-4 years of experience programming front-end code in a production environment and familiarity with TDD and CICD
  • Experience using End-to-End Testing Frameworks like Cypress are helpful but not required
  • Familiarity with software like Figma, Sketch, Adobe Suite, Whimsical will be useful for the design work
  • You should be independent, curious and comfortable learning on the fly as the company will change rapidly over the next 12 months
  • We're also looking for someone that has good communication/collaboration skills, gets on with our small team and is easy to work with!
  • You'll need to be able to work with back-end developers in a thoughtful, collaborative fashion
  • Organised and able to prioritise your work effectively in order to meet sprint targets and work towards the teams' goals
  • Should have an understanding of UI principles / a strong design sensibility to help create an excellent product
  • We're open to different backgrounds, so even if you don't meet these exact specifications, as long as you can demonstrate you have the ability for the role, we'd still love to hear from you.

Benefits

Although we're an early stage company, we still have some great benefits that we offer alongside our competitive salary package.

  • Stock Option Plan and Founding Team: As an early stage startup, you have the opportunity to get meaningful equity compensation and be part of the founding team of the company.
  • Work From Home: So long as you're able to work effectively when remote and you can spend at least 1-2 days in the office, we can be flexible with the remaining days.
  • Private Health Insurance: Comprehensive cover from Vitality including Mental Health support, GP appointments, and Vitality Rewards for discounts and prizes.
  • Self-care allowance: Up to £500/year in wellbeing or personal development budget to use in a way that works for you. This is reimbursed directly into your payslip.
  • Pension Plan: We work with Smart Pension to provide you with an easy-to-use pension plan that's sustainable, intelligent and financially rewarding.
  • Socials: We all spend a lot of time working, so having some time to relax and blow off steam is important to us - we aim to do something at least monthly!

Our Values

  • Patients and practices first. Our work is for the benefit of the patients we serve and the practices who care for them. Make sure that everything we do keeps patients and practices in mind.
  • Be an entrepreneur. Treat the business like your own. Take initiative and come back with one less problem than you started with. Take ownership of your ideas from whiteboard to web browser.
  • Work thoughtfully, measure everything. Understand what success looks like and quantify it in an unambiguous way. Be rigorous in how you think and develop ideas.
  • Results over rules. We're not prescriptive about how you achieve outcomes. Everyone should work in ways that are best for them, as long as the results speak for themselves!
  • Always learning, always improving. The world doesn't stand still and neither should we - whether that's our own personal development or how we think about our products. There's always something we can do to make things better.
