Job description
Currently seeking a driver/tour guide to work on a freelance basis for private driving tours for up to 7 people at a time.
To date every driving tour we have ever done has received only 5 star reviews on Tripadvisor/Google and I am looking for an excellent candidate who is confident they can continue this.
Ideally the candidate will be Edinburgh based and able to do walking tours, however the priority is driving tours. Driving tours last between 8-10 hours per day and are paid £150 per tour, walking tours last approx 3-4 hours and are paid £80 per tour. We are looking for people who love to travel and are passionate about showing-off our beautiful country to visitors.
An ideal candidate will already be able to prove their track record with reviews for tours, but anyone who can demonstrate a great record of online reviews of customer satisfaction will be considered. A passion for Scotland and knowledge of its history are also essential in this role.
The driving tours are mainly to the Central Highlands (approx 8-9 hours), day trips from Edinburgh to St Andrews (approx 8 hours) and Edinburgh to Glencoe (9-10 hours) plus possible multi day trips round the Scottish Highlands where accommodation costs and food allowance is also provided. We also offer tours of the Edinburgh and Lothians area (Old Town, New Town, South Queensferry, Rosslyn Chapel).
The driver guide keeps all tips and, as these are private tours, tips are often generous.
The tours follow a general itinerary but, depending on clients’ requests, itineraries can be adapted and this requires the guides to be flexible on the day. Training on routes will be provided. Some routes involve a bit of a walk/mild hike. Further education and courses can be supplied for candidates that wish to further their knowledge.
Candidates are required to apply by submitting a C.V with a covering letter which answers the following questions:
1. Why are you applying for this position?
2. What relevant experience do you have?
3. Where can I find reviews of your previous tours?
4. What is your favourite route to drive on tour?
5. Do you have a favourite period of history to tell people about?
6. What part of Scottish culture do you love to tell people about (whisky, music, folklore etc)?
7. If a client said on tour in Edinburgh they wanted to stop at a local pub (anywhere in the city) where would you go and why? Also, if they said they wanted to eat in a good local spot where would you take them?
8. Where is your favourite place to take people to eat in the Highlands?
9. Are you a member of historic environment Scotland? Being a member and being able to go inside castles such as Stirling and Urquhart will be to your advantage.
10. What do you think makes you an excellent candidate for the job?
11. Vehicle pick up will be in Edinburgh (EH4). A bus link is nearby and you can park for free if you travel in your own vehicle. Will this be a problem for you?
12. How would you organise tour bookings in your own schedule (google calendar, physical diary etc)?
13. Do you have a smartphone you can use for communication with clients/me and also use for maps when driving?
14. Do you have any points on your driving license?
Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
