Policing seldom gets more complex than this

Improving the safety of over 8 million Londoners is a 24/7/365 job. Our Forensic Services team is at the forefront of that, delivering a range of technical and scientific expertise to solve London’s most complex policing challenges. If you’re a lateral thinker as well as a problem solver, this is a rare chance for you to build your career as part of our front-line crime scene examination response.

As one of our Forensic Practitioners, you’ll work alongside other practitioners and senior colleagues. You’ll undertake the forensic examination of MPS scenes of crime, and preserve, record and recover forensic evidence effectively. In addition, we’ll look to you to provide specialist advice and guidance to MPS personnel regarding forensic issues to support the investigation of all categories of crime.

You’ll need to hold Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Stage 1 and 2 and have had a full clean manual driving licence for at least one year. You’ll also need to pass an internal driving assessment so that you can be authorised to drive police vehicles.

You will have a broad understanding of the full range of forensic services available to an investigation and will have carried out examinations across a wide range of crime scenes, including volume, serious and major crime. You should have the proven ability to lead on Major/Serious Crime Scene examinations until the arrival of senior colleagues and be experienced in the control of all aspects of crime scene examination and police related incidents.

You must also be able to undertake physical operational duties under a variety of circumstances, including manual handling and lifting. We’ll provide training for this in Emergency Life Saving Skills and Officer Safety Training. Additionally, you must pass a vetting procedure in line with the Metropolitan Police Vetting Policy, which involves providing DNA & Fingerprints for elimination purposes which will be held on relevant databases throughout your employment.

Lastly, you should be happy to join a busy shift team on early, late and night shifts including weekends and bank holidays. In return, we’ll offer you a shift disturbance allowance, and weekend working enhancement.

Forensic Services within the Met means exciting career opportunities and ongoing specialist skill development across a number of frontline operational disciplines. You’ll have the chance to develop your career through lateral and progressive promotional opportunities across the board. You can also look forward to benefits including substantial annual leave, Civil Service pension arrangements, interest free season ticket loans and more.
