Job Title: Forensic Administrator

Salary: £28,511 to £30,504 plus a Location allowance of £1,721. You will receive £28,511 the band minimum. Progress to the band maximum of £30,504 will be via incremental progression.

The Role:

A Forensic Administrator will process a forensic submission from receipt to conclusion, ensuring that submissions are accurately processed, allocated and recorded. They will be the first point of contact for internal and external customers seeking advice on a forensic investigation and provide an effective, efficient administrative support function for the Directorate of Forensic Services.

Our teams are the first point of contact for exhibits and enquiries in all forensic submissions, responsible for handling around 250,000 requests per year.

Every request needs to be received, prioritised and tracked to assist investigations and specialist/technical staff. You will be required to assess priority, and quality assurance within each submission, in line with policy and the quality management system. You will provide a customer-focused and professional response to Investigators and Forensic staff. You need to be able to remain calm under pressure and maintain attention to detail and have excellent communication skills. The most important attribute is that you want to make a difference to the communities of London by playing your part in the processing of forensic work. Forensic Services handle all cases in Fingerprints, DNA, Science, Imaging and Digital, firearms, all arrestee samples in custody as well as the reporting of DNA matches in live investigations. Upholding legal requirements and supporting the Criminal Justice System ensuring the continuity of all evidence provided. You may be required to provide statements for court, as well as attend court as a witness if required

Key Responsibilities:

What does the average day look like? Your core duties will include:

  • Accurate inputting of essential data, interrogate, monitor and review both local and MPS Case Management Information Systems and any other databases relevant to role.
  • Provide an initial point of contact for all enquiries directed to the team. Provide a help-desk / liaison service for a variety of telephone, electronic and personal callers.
  • Quality assure submissions to ensure accuracy of information and compliance with procedure. Reject exhibits which do not conform to prescribed standards.
  • Flexible working to meet operational demand
  • Create work packages and assign submissions according to forensic requirement and in line with procedures and contractual obligations. Store exhibits in line with rules of continuity and integrity.
  • Prioritise workload according to the level of urgency of each case and regularly review and monitor cases to manage priorities.
  • Process identifications/ matches in accordance with requirements
  • Provide Management Information and Key Performance Indicator reports to line managers as required
  • Complete administrative functions in association with tasks undertaken providing administrative support to the technical team.
  • Provide timely and accurate minutes of Forensic Services local team meetings
  • Work in partnership with Department of Forensic Services and line managers to develop and deliver change
  • Comply with all Health and Safety obligations
  • Manage resources in accordance with MPS policy
  • To work within the Directorate’s Quality Management System and actively participate in the continuous improvement of the system by engaging in audits, competence tests, reporting non-conformances, etc and suggesting changes to improve the system

  • Ability to manage workloads and resources

  • Awareness of the rules regarding evidence gathering, exhibit handling, continuity, integrity and the Criminal Justice System and be prepared to offer evidence and attend court if required.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with customers, colleagues and stakeholders

  • Competent IT user in a variety of corporate and stand-alone systems and applications
  • Desirable to have an understanding of the technical and procedural processes within Forensic Services.
  • Confident decision maker and problem solver
  • Manual handling essential to transport exhibits.
  • Provide a DNA sample and fingerprints for inclusion on the staff elimination databases
  • Work within Forensic Services Quality Management System
  • Indicate agreement to abide by Forensic Regulator’s Code of Practice and Conduct.
