Job description

Would you like to use your passion for delivering high quality visitor experiences and be at the heart of telling English Heritage's story? If so, then join our Catering team at Down House - The home of Charles Darwin and play your part in helping visitors experience more of England's captivating past and preserve it for generations to come.

This is a unique opportunity for you to work at the home where the Darwin family lived for 40 years. You can step in to the study where Darwin penned his groundbreaking book ' On the Origin of Species' and follow in his footsteps down his 'thinking path' the sandwalk.

You will be working in the very place where the Darwins family meals were prepared daily by their cook Mrs Evans. Serve up a slice of history with one of Emma's original recipes to help our visitors have a truly immersive visit.

Our tearooms provide the social hub of this historic site and you will play a vital part in creating a warm and welcoming environment where our visitors can relax and enjoy high quality food. Whether you are serving coffee at the counter, cleaning down tables or preparing orders in the kitchen, this is an environment that will keep you busy and engaged. You will be part of an organisation that is committed to ensuring our visitors leave having had a great experience and believe in a great team environment.

We would be delighted to hear from you, if you would like to talk to us about this role before you apply, please contact [email protected].

This role is for 15 hours per week from April - Oct including weekends and bank holidays. Flexibility in availability is vital in this role.

We are looking for people who are committed to providing the very highest levels of customer service, achieving targets and enjoy being part of a busy team with constantly changing priorities. As a confident communicator, you will be comfortable building rapport with customers and using your skills in sales to provide outstanding service at all times. You will take pride in the presentation of both yourself and the produce you serve to visitors.

Everyone is welcome at English Heritage and we are always looking for people who reflect the diversity of the country today, to help us make it more relevant to the diversity of the people, communities and places we serve. From remote sites to inner city monuments, from regional teams to our Head Office, the diversity of our teams is critical to making sure our heritage is inclusive, exciting and accessible.

We continually look for new ways to promote the past in a way that is inclusive to all and that celebrates the cultural diversity of England's heritage. By joining English Heritage, you will be part of a charity that is already on an exciting journey to tell everyone's story.
