Main Purpose

We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Firefighters at the 422 Air

Base Group, Royal Air Force Croughton, United Kingdom.

The 422 Air Base Group is looking to recruit a Firefighter to serve as a firefighter/basic life support assigned to a crew
engaged in structural firefighting and rescue operations; driving and operating firefighting vehicles of significant
complexity; and to assist in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards to protect persons, property, or the
environment, and performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures.
As a Firefighter, they will perform basic life support, drive and operate a variety of firefighting vehicles, to include Airport
Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles. Furthermore, they will also perform structural firefighting duties for a variety of
facilities, which may include large multistoried buildings, industrial areas, and/or base storage facilities. In addition they will
also maintain firefighting equipment and fire station facilities, as well as complying with health, safety, and environmental

rules and procedures and performing work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.

Knowledge and Experience Required
Applicants must demonstrate the following:

  • Must have working knowledge of basic and specialized structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm operation, fire extinguisher operations, etc.), techniques and procedures.
  • Working knowledge to apply Basic Life Support techniques and protocols.
  • Knowledge and ability to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of a significant complexity, and of the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to water flow, water pressure, water levels, lines (friction) losses, etc.
  • Working knowledge of basic and specialized building design, construction, and occupancy.
  • Working knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders.
  • Skill in operating communication equipment.
  • Ability to maintain good working relations; to communicate orally and in writing; to lift and carry heavy loads; and to apply emergency first aid techniques.

  • Hours of work: Start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with organization’s flexible working policies.
  • Will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • May be assigned other duties that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the employee.
  • May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training. Position may be coded as mission essential.
  • A 6–12-month probationary period will be required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • May be required to travel overnight to US or other countries in the performance of official duties or attend necessary train.

Employee must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program.
Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
This position is considered operational; therefore the incumbent is entitled to receive an Operational Firefighter
Pay Supplement for working an approved USAFE ‘as rostered’ shift pattern which may include weekends and public holidays.
May be subject to recall.
Employee may be subject to random drug testing.
This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
Work will require driving a motor vehicle. A valid CAT C driving licence is required.
Positon requires the ability to discern colors, contract, and depth.
May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT).
Member is subject to work the Emergency Communications Center (ECC).
May be required to perform duties associated with the operation of aircraft arresting barrier equipment.
Employee is required to be certified by the Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System as
Firefighter II (includes Firefighter I), HAZMAT Awareness, HAZMAT Operations and obtain certification in
Apparatus Driver Operator (Pumper, Tanker or ARFF)- as applicable, Mobile Water Supply (WMS) and possess
Basic Life Support Certification, NREMT (Basic). Please note: Training plans will be established and monitored by the supervisor and may specify the length of tie the employee has to obtain certification. Some training may require recertification on a regular or intermittent basis.
May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties, or attend necessary training.
There is a mandatory retirement age of 60 years for firefighters hired under the Local National Direct Hire
Program.

This position is primarily located at RAF Croughton, however, the incumbent will occasionally be required to work at RAF Fairford as directed by management. The incumbent may be required to use their own private vehicle without reimbursement for additional travel expenses associated with reporting for duty at RAF Croughton.
