Job description
About Our Job
Have you been seeking a career opportunity that takes you out of the office and into the third-busiest airport in the United States? Something that will get your hands on the buildings and systems that you’re reviewing, and allows you to inspect and engage while using a variety of skills on a daily basis?
A rare opportunity to have that and more has recently become available with the City and County of Denver’s Fire Department (DFD) within the Fire Protection Engineer role at the Denver International Airport (DEN). This role will allow you to work in the field doing hands-on work, inspecting a multitude of airport facilities and operations that are being modified or newly constructed at DEN. This includes site visits during every phase of a new project from pre-submittal to final acceptance. In addition, collaboration with DFD DEN fire inspectors is an essential task and requires participation in technical inspections of existing buildings and operations at DEN. Technical inspections and evaluations of existing facilities and operations identify critical life safety issues as it relates to building and fire codes. DEN is over 25 years old and covers 54 square miles in area with buildings occupying over twenty-two (22) million square feet and still growing. Facilities include airport terminals, concourses, underground trains, baggage handling systems, aircraft hangars, aircraft maintenance, cargo hangars, and aviation fuel systems and operations (storage tank farm, piping, pumps, dispensing hydrants, emergency shut off systems). Denver International Airport (DEN) is one of the top ten busiest airports in the world, connecting our community globally through flight and business. DEN is the primary economic engine for the state of Colorado, generating more than $33 billion for the region annually and employing nearly 30,000 people.
When you’re not in the field, you’ll be working directly with DFD, Denver Building Department (CPD), and DEN agencies, participating in meetings and conducting technical plan reviews gaining valuable insight and knowledge. The plan review process requires extensive knowledge of life safety codes, standards, and fire response operations that are specific to an airport. It also requires the ability to maintain a high level of quality while ensuring the project is reviewed and approved in a timely manner to meet completion deadlines. Design documents include civil, architectural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, life safety, smoke control, fire protection, and fire alarm, emergency alarm drawings and specifications. The review process includes researching applicable codes and standards to ensure compliance with all life safety requirements.
The Fire Department of the City and County of Denver is looking to expand and add an additional Fire Protection Engineer to their Denver International Airport, Fire Prevention Division team. The Fire Protection Engineer will be responsible for a wide variety of activities, including (1) performing technical plan review for fire protection & life safety systems (2) reviewing construction design documents for new and existing buildings (3) attending and participating in project development meetings (4) conducting technical inspections of structures and occupancies and (5) acceptance testing of systems.
You’ll also be able to take advantage of an incredibly flexible schedule with the choice between a 4/10 schedule or 9/80 flex schedule. In addition to the schedule that works best with your work-life balance, you’ll have the opportunity to work remotely (up to 2 days a week) when you need the ability to focus or attend virtual meetings.
