Job summary

The Identification Bureau conducts fingerprint comparison and searching activity in support of agency criminal justice outcomes and International fingerprint requirements on behalf of the UK. The team additionally has responsibility of UK Gatekeeper for Prüm Fingerprint Exchange supporting policing partners with the administration of search quota allocation and fair usage.

To meet increasing demand for our services a new vacancy for a G5 – Identification Officer has arisen to play a crucial role in contributing to the established operational fingerprint capability and business administration of services.

On Tuesday 28th February 2023 from 6pm we are holding a virtual MS teams event where you can hear from NCA officers working within the role.

Job description

Ideally candidates should have completed a fingerprint training course at an initial level or have completed equivalent in-house training and work-based experience in a recognised bureau in either a technical or support role. They should be highly motivated self-starters and flexible to work on some of the most serious and organised crime affecting the UK

With a sound understanding of working in an accredited environment candidates should be supportive of continuous improvement and be keen to get involved with and make a meaningful contribution to the validation of new methods.

Owing to the range of NCA workflows integral to the bureaus technical function good IT literacy to independently interact with a range of tools and contacts will be essential to the operation of several IT platforms and software applications.

***All NCA officers must hold SC Enhanced upon entry as a minimum. To meet the National Security Vetting requirements for this role you will need to have resided in the UK for a minimum of 3 out of the past 5 years. For more information please see the Candidate information Pack**

Person specification

The Identification Officer role entails processing fingerprint data using national collections in accordance with Agency procedure, ISO 17025 standards and FSR Codes; produce accurate reports to support NCA core business and process fingerprint and demographic data as required in support of other internal business streams, including the maintenance of fingerprint records and related entities assuring rules on data retention and legal provisions are followed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct analysis, comparison and evaluation of friction ridge detail.
  • Search marks and tenprints against national collections to determine identity.
  • Create and maintain biometric records using IDENT1 and Specialist Collections and carry out relevant tasks to ensure rapid processing, including compliance activity in relation to the Protection of Freedoms Act.
  • Contribute to validation of technical activity and implement departmental procedures in line with forensic regulation and accreditation standards.
  • Perform a range of work activities utilising specialist databases in support of NCA Casework and other international functions.
  • Administration of UK Gatekeeper responsibilities for Prüm Fingerprint Exchange.

Qualifications

The following qualifications/skills are essential to the role and proof will be required at interview:

Foundation/Initial level fingerprint training or equivalent.
