Job Description:
Main Purpose
Lead and develop all financial controls and accounting matters for the Thalia Waste Management business ensuring the controls and processes are fully communicated, understood and complied with, and ensure all financial activity is professionally and legally compliant. In addition, you will act as a senior member of the Executive Management team, supporting them in making decisions through the provision of business financial data.
Size and scope:
- Responsible for a business of 600 permanent employees plus circa 150 temporary workers and with annual revenues of £100-150m
- Reports to the CEO of Thalia Waste Management, with a dotted line to the CFO of Ferrovial Energy Infrastructure & Mobility (FEIM)
The role is home based with a significant amount of time spent at our operational facilities throughout the UK as determined by the business.
Responsibilities
- Support the CEO in establishing finance as a true ‘business partner’ by integrating finance across the business and providing real value through the provision of quality, timely and accurate information, highlighting issues and trends, and ultimately developing the finance function to make it best-in-class and support the business ambitions
- Lead the finance function for the business, ensuring the integrity of the accounting policies and standards and the financial governance of the business
- Participate fully as a member of the Executive Management team pro‐actively and positively by challenging, supporting and participating in all key business strategic decisions affecting the organisation, taking responsibility for ensuring the business maximises the full potential from opportunities in its core markets and new commercial ventures
- Understand the business, the marketplaces in which it operates and take an active role in identifying and developing strategic options and plans which will allow the business to maximise its revenue and profit growth
- Support the CEO in developing, refining and delivering corporate strategy within in the business
- Manage the financial planning process, including annual budgets, periodic forecasts and funding requirements
- Ensure that the finance function provides timely, comprehensive, accurate and realistic management information and commentary on the performance against agreed criteria, including comprehensive analyses of all risks, with a ‘no surprises’ culture
- Ensure that management information is provided in a timely and accurate basis to assist the Business Managers in the effective control and development of their areas of responsibility
- Manage the relationship with key stakeholders to ensure that they are fully informed as to the financial performance of the business, including the preparation of monthly reports for management accounts and actively participating in monthly reviews with FEIM’s management
- Preparing and presenting investment proposals ensuring that they have been reviewed with rigour and are consistent with the facts
- Ensure that effective financial and operational structures are in place to support the requirements of a growing business. These include team development, succession planning, effective management etc. to ensure that staff within the finance function are motivated
• Supporting FEIM’s CFO with any cross-divisional initiative that involves the finance function including the management of relationship with internal auditors • Preparation, review and sign-off of statutory accounts for presentation to Thalia’s Board of Directors, including management of relationship with external auditors.
Person Requirements
Qualifications
• Qualified ACA, ACCA, CIMA, with a strong academic background. • Demonstrable commercial expertise gained within a company that has undergone growth in a competitive marketplace

- Clear understanding of the importance of robust business processes and systems and a strong commitment to quality
- Able to manage change across a multi‐site business through effective working relationships with operational finance and management teams
- Able to demonstrate an effective working relationship with a CEO and Corporate CFO and the understanding of how that relationship can help drive a business forward
- Ability to work openly and collaboratively to maximise overall organisational health
- Highly developed influencing skills at all levels
- Strong negotiation skills
- Ability to deliver tangible, bottom line results showing strong business / commercial acumen within a significant business unit
- Able to contribute as a full member of a Executive team
- Ability to take and be accountable for decisions reflecting the ‘One Thalia’ level, balancing risk against value as appropriate
- Ability to own and solve business problems bringing in support from other areas as appropriate
- Ability to implement and support a customer-centric approach
- Proven ability to lead, develop and inspire a significant team within a business
Experience
- Previous FD experience (desirable)
- Significant experience operating in similar senior roles
- Success in leading the finance function in a £150m+ p.a. commercial business environment
- Experience of the same industry, or industry presenting similar financial challenge
