About the team


The Analytics & Insight Chapter sits at the heart of the Tesco Mobile business, providing the business with essential data and insight to drive business decisions, partnering with functions across the business, such as marketing, commercial, digital and channel to understand business needs and then implement solutions.


The Analytics & Insight Chapter, is a diverse one covering financial, sales, behavioral, attitudinal, competitor and customer experience datasets, providing us with a holistic view of our customers and the market, which allows us to live out our mission make customers & consumers the focal point of business decisions. We aim to both inform and challenge the business on developing opportunities and threats and proactively unearth insight to improve business strategy and maximize commercial return to the Tesco Mobile business.


About the role


This role sits in the central Data, Analytics & Insight Chapter and supports our Finance department understand our data, so that we can secure loans from our banking partners to buy handsets. It is an essential and complex role, which requires creativity, attention to detail and a strong use of SQL and Python.


Tesco Mobile is an Agile organization, meaning that we work very closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and goals and then implement the right solution. The role also requires close collaboration with internal data analysts and a strong understanding of our business fundamentals.


The role will require a strong understanding of SQL and relational databases , so that you are able to transform and interpret internal data and provide insight to the business. You will be strong at relationship building and communication, to ensure that briefs are stress tested, to provide maximum value to the business, with presenting findings and influencing stakeholders being a key focus of the role.


Financial reporting is a developing area in the Tesco Mobile business, which means that you will need to be a problem solver and continually work to improve the way that we report financially, to minimize risk for the business.


Tesco Mobile has recently undergone a business transformation and moved to an Agile business, as part of this you will have opportunities to help the Data, Analytics and Insight Chapter to increase its impact in the business.

Key Responsibilities


As a Financial Data Analyst, you will:


- Support the financial function in creating and maintaining financial reports ensuring that the reports are robust and accurate - Belong to the Insight & Analytics Squad and be responsible for end-to-end delivery of reports, ad-hoc requests and visual dashboards.

  • Bring your individual expertise to the Squad to deliver at pace using short cycles of experimentation with a ‘fail-fast-learn-fast’ attitude.
  • Take part in all Squad ceremonies and events, raising impediments as soon as found to help delivery
  • Inspect and adapt your way of working for continuous improvement.
  • Embody an Agile mindset and culture to contribute to the growth in Agile maturity of our business.
  • Be an autonomous, trusted decision maker able to self-organise, use your knowledge and expertise to deliver the right solution for the customer.
  • Provide accurate, insightful and timely analysis to the business to help them make better decisions and enable Tesco Mobile to serve its customers a little better every day.
  • Ability to simplify the complex and generate precise insights then communicate them clearly.
  • Be a trusted subject matter expert to selected Squads across the business, develop and share business knowledge together and find new opportunities to deliver insight.
  • Continually look to improve processes through efficiencies and by applying best practices

Skills/ Experience Required

  • Strong attention to detail to ensure that results are robust, accurate and reliable
  • Experience in coding complex SQL queries against a large relational customer database, identifying relevant data sources and summarising to provide the insight as identified
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a logical approach
  • Good understanding of version control (GitHub), visualisation tools (Power BI), and programming (Python)
  • Knowledge of general cloud-computing concepts (Azure)
  • Ability to manage stakeholders at all levels to ensure they have access to the right data, at the right time, in the right place
  • Skilled at adapting communication for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Highly numerate with a degree in Mathematics/Statistics or similar degree with high numerate content
  • Ability to resolve data-related problems
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team but also comfortable with being the owner of a product backlog for your Squad and self-organising to deliver it
