Information Analyst with Graduate Apprenticeship in Data Science and AI

We are looking for numerical candidates who have a passion for working with data; have the commitment and motivation to learn new skills and put them into practise in the work environment. You'll spend most of your time learning on the job but will also be a student at university. The training lasts 4 years and the outcome is a Graduate Apprenticeship in Data Science SCQF level 10, a BSc (Hons) Data Science. Did we mention it’s 100% free? Through central funding you’ll get the best of both worlds – all the benefits of a job and those of being a student at one of the best universities in Scotland. The Band 5 Annex 21 Training Contract means you would be placed on a training salary which is increased each year of your degree, using the following % of the current Band 5 salary:
- Year 1: 60% of the top of a Band 5 £22,598
- Year 2: 65% £24,481
- Year 3: 70% £26,364
- Year 4: 75% £28,248
On successful completion of the Graduate Apprenticeship, you would be moved to the starting salary of a Band 5 Information Analyst, currently £30,229, and your contract of employment will be made permanent.
About the Organisation:

As one of our Information Analysts you will:
- Analyse and interpret complex data
- Use a wide range of data sources and powerful analytics tools to provide insight that supports better decision making
- Present complex data effectively through data visualisation techniques
- Communicate data insights in a customer focussed environment
- Help core customers access and analyse our many data sets
- Compile and present important statistics to a wide audience, including NHS Scotland, NHS Boards, Scottish Government, other partner organisations, and the general public
What skills, background and experience do you need to apply?
- A strong understanding of numeric subjects such as mathematics, basic statistics, Data Science / Computer Science is essential.
- Ideally 4+ Highers at B or above – with maths being one, or a Modern Apprenticeship in Digital Applications or equivalent analytical working experience
- Good IT skills, with experience of programming / data analysis and use of statistical tools such as R, Python, Excel, SPSS, or Business Objects are also required
- Good verbal and written communication skills, able to prepare concise and easily understood information
- Ability to work independently on own initiative and to contribute as part of a team
- A strong sense of resilience and flexibility to adapt to different working environments/ locations/teams
- Able to work under pressure, meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks
- Accurate and pays attention to detail
- Strong commitment to personal development and motivation to complete a degree while working.
Location and Working Pattern:
At Public Health Scotland, we operate on a hybrid working model which means that you’re working pattern will likely include working from home as well as in an office.
Our Head Office bases are Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Meridian Court, Glasgow. Please noted that PHS is currently in the process of relocating from Meridian Court to another Glasgow City Centre location.
The work pattern is Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours
During times of public health emergencies, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, to meet the needs of the service.
It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.
