Smallbutcool Chartered Accountants are looking to recruit a Financial Controller for a privately owned publishing company based in the U.S.A.

Manning Publications has been publishing books that teach technical topics to software professionals for over two decades, and their books, projects, and videos are the best in the business. We are looking for a Financial Controller / CFO to join the team to work closely with the company’s owner and CEO.

Location: Virtual (applicants should be U.K. based).

Manning Publications is an entirely virtual organization based on Shelter Island, New York, with employees across the globe. This is a remote working position where you will work flexible hours to liaise with colleagues in different time zones. The nature of the role will also require you to be self-motivated, hands-on, and detail-oriented.

The ideal applicant will be a qualified accountant with experience in a similar role in a multi- channel publishing, eCommerce, or related sector. This is a key role within the business, encompassing as well as financial control and reporting, operational responsibility, contract negotiation and management, and data analysis and insight.

Responsibilities

• Understand, oversee, and control the company’s financial systems.
• Prepare accurate monthly management accounts including a full profit and loss and balance sheet.
• Prepare accurate monthly reports on channel and title sales and profitability.
• Prepare accurate monthly reports on the compny's website performance.
• Meet regularly with the owner to discuss the company’s performance as highlighted by the above and continuously look for ways to improve results.
• Oversee the company’s accounts staff, ensuring they are performing their roles accurately and on a timely basis, and assist them on issues as they arise.
• Ensure all reconciliations and controls are effective and being performed as required.
• Oversee the weekly and monthly outsourced payrolls for all staff.
• Forecast and control the company’s cash flow including oversight and management of the company’s payable and receivable ledgers.
• Coordinate and direct the preparation of an annual budget and financial forecasts.
• Oversee the company’s contracts with their distributors, printers, and others, reviewing them on a regular basis and re-negotiating where appropriate to improve terms.
• Ensure appropriate cost control processes are in place and reviewed regularly.
• Liaise with the company’s advisors, to ensure that all tax and other relevant returns are submitted accurately and on-time.
• Liaise with internal and external stakeholders as appropriate including banks, advisors, staff, customers, and suppliers.
• Additional duties as may arise from time to time.

The Ideal Candidate

• A qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CPA, CMA)
• Hands-on and prepared to dive into detail.
• Strong QuickBooks and Excel skills.
• Experience of multi-channel eCommerce and/or publishing.
• Experience of U.S. reporting would be a bonus.
• Must have a personable, flexible, and positive attitude and be able to create and maintain strong relationships at all levels.
• Able and willing to work remotely.

Salary: £50,000.00-£75,000.00 per year
