Edge Hill Students’ Union is a charitable organisation that provides advocacy, engagement, and campaign services on behalf of our students to ensure they have a high-quality university experience whilst they study at Edge Hill University. We also operate several revenue-generating services to deliver our objectives.
We are about to go through an exciting phase of development, with a new Students’ Union building being built which is due to open in September 2024. This will involve a 12–18-month transition period for our trading services (food and beverage outlets, events facility, and launderette) and as such we require a confident, decisive, forward thinking Finance Manager to work closely with our
Chief Executive and Director of Student Engagement to ensure financial sustainability throughout this project. You will lead and develop our Support Team (currently a Finance & Payroll Assistant and a HR & Executive Support Officer).
Working closely with the Support Team and under the guidelines of both Company and Charity Law, you will be expected to work with our core values in mind to assist with the development of, and improvement to, Edge Hill Students’ Union financial systems, processes and activities:

Job Purpose:
We are seeking an experienced and motivated finance manager to join our team. The finance manager will be responsible for managing the financial and human operations of the company, including financial planning and analysis, budgeting, forecasting, accounting, and financial reporting.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in finance and accounting, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with other departments within the organisation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead/develop the Support department (Finance and HR) and staff therein providing team meetings, 1 to 1’s and appraisals
- Oversee the prompt processing of invoices, payments, bank reconciliations, transfers, monthly payroll, and year end returns by the Finance & Payroll Assistant
- Reconcile control accounts on a regular basis to ensure everything operates effectively, to make investigations or adjustments to accounts as required
- Prepare and present monthly management accounts, annual budgets, cash flow forecasts and sensitivity reports to management and the Board of Trustees
- Ensure the accounts and financial records for EHSU and its subsidiaries are up to date, accurate and fit for audit
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the finance function
- Collaborate with other departments to develop and implement business plans and initiatives and provide guidance on the correct procedures for budgeting and accounting in order to comply with financial risk management and to increase operational productivity
- Monitor and review student society accounts working with relevant staff and officers to proactively address issues that may arise
- Manage the company cash flow and bank balances, ensuring excess funds are moved to and from the deposit account on a timely basis to gain maximum return
- Liaise with the Union’s Trustees, bankers, accountants, tax agencies, suppliers and customers to build good working relations
- Oversee the internal audit of commercial departments including the investigation of anomalies in account balances, stock and assets, budgeting, fund usage and financial procedures
- Maintain the VAT register and prepare quarterly MTD VAT returns involving partially exempt income/expenditure and irrecoverable VAT, ensuring compliance and maximum benefit
- Develop pre-audit work plans and ensure all information is up to date and available to auditors during the audit period
- Prepare an extended trial balance and detailed breakdowns for the Students’ Unions auditors
- File annual company returns with Companies House and the Charity Commission, and regular ONS returns
- Ensure annual compliance with PCI DSS including regular monthly checks on payment security in line with our Card Payment Data Security Policy
- Manage the Union’s annual insurance renewals and any claims during the year
- This list of duties is not exhaustive or prescriptive and may be reviewed and updated periodically after consultation with the postholder, at which point the postholder will be expected to take a proactive role in any changes
