Description
Under general supervision, performs fiscal control and governmental accounting work in a division of a large Town department. Is responsible for various parts of the bookkeeping cycle including billing, receipts, deposits, balancing and control. Reports to division supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assists in maintaining disbursement accounts for the Town, including encumbering of purchases, auditing of invoices, preparing vouchers, posting, reconciling and preparing trial balances and other necessary reports; maintains paid voucher files.
- Maintains various parts of a complete set of general accounting books, which may include control accounts, and informs department heads of budget balances.
- Assists in maintaining accounts receivable records, including the preparation of daily reports on collections, posting of figures to general ledger, taking of trial balances and preparation of billing statements.
- Assists with payroll of department personnel.
- Examines vouchers, invoices, audit reports or other posting media to determine their accuracy, completeness and conformance with laws and regulations.
- Reconciles bank accounts and corrects daily postings of cash receipts.
Contacts employees in Town departments and outside vendors concerning accounts and payments. - Maintains records of receipt of purchased items; identifies items with coded tags and maintain files; tracks transfers of equipment between Town departments.
- Prepares balances and runs A/P checks, including handwritten checks and all refund checks.
- Trains and supervises high school interns.
Minimum Requirements (Must meet by the closing date of the posting unless otherwise stated)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED:
- Graduation from high school supplemented by vocational course work in bookkeeping or accounting.
- One (1) to two (2) years of experience in bookkeeping or accounting-clerical work.
