Job description
Our Finance Control team is responsible for the overall co-ordination, monitoring, reporting and consolidation of the Programme budgets within Rail Passenger Services.
As Finance Assistant you will support the delivery of key financial processes that ensure the department pays suppliers and records financial transactions appropriately. You will develop a detailed understanding of the objectives, financial transactions, and business areas of Passenger Services. You will apply this knowledge to your expertise in financial processes to ensure operations are able to respond to diverse needs while maintaining a level of commonality through standard guidelines, frameworks, processes, and tools.

In this role, your key responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in the preparation of periodic Train Operating Company (TOC) payments for certification and authorisation
- Loading periodic Train Operator financial forecasts and actuals onto Department for Transport’s management information system
- Assisting in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive database to facilitate the sharing of TOC financial information to a wide variety of partners
- Assisting in the preparation of internal processes and procedures, and responses to Parliamentary Questions (PQs), and Freedom of Information requests (FOIs) and other similar information requests
- Supporting in the collation of information and evidence for both internal and external audits
- Acting as Specialist Requisitioner and working closely with contract managers to ensure prompt payments to our suppliers in line with departmental prompt payment policy
- Monthly/periodic accounting entries and submission of month end accruals and cash flow forecasts.
You will have the option to be based in our London office attracting the London salary, or Leeds or Birmingham attracting the National salary. Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or team events in our London office.
A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
Person specification
About You
You will have relevant finance experience and be committed to complete a minimum of a level 4 finance qualification once in role.
You will be highly numerate, with a high diligence and accuracy to produce quality record keeping and forecasts. You will be proficient with Microsoft Office Excel, and have experience of gathering financial and technical data to produce financial reports/dashboards.
You will display excellent interpersonal skills to build collaborative relationships at all levels within and outside of the Department. You will have experience of sharing your financial knowledge and expertise with others in an effective manner.
You will be proactive, with excellent planning and organisation skills, work well independently and as part of a team to deliver quality outputs and balance competing priorities.
