Our Finance function plays a key role in running our business and we have Finance Apprentice opportunities to join our team based primarily from our Solihull Tarmac Hub Offices close to Birmingham Airport in the West Midlands. We have two different programmes available, one based in our Shared Service Centre with a focus on gaining experience within our transactional teams, and one general finance apprentice, which is a longer programme covering a broader range of rotations across our finance team.

Both are hybrid working roles working in office, at home and also across our sites. On days you are required to be based in office, this role is commutable from Birmingham, Solihull, Coventry, Bedworth, Kenilworth, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Lichfield, Cannock, Sutton Coldfield, Nuneaton, Tamworth, Hinkley, Redditch, Bromsgrove, Worcester, and the surrounding areas. If you are part of our general finance apprenticeship, later in your apprenticeship you may also have the opportunity to undertake rotations based in other parts of our business across the UK.

A typical day working as a Finance Apprentice may include:

Role Responsibility

You'll work towards the Association of Accounting Technicians, Level 3 qualification whilst you work alongside and learn from highly experienced colleagues who have worked as finance professionals for numerous years.

Our business is so diverse in what we do an offer for our customers, our finance teams cover a number of areas of work. Your activities may well vary on a daily and weekly basis, but you can expect the below as the core areas of your role.

  • Structured rotations, across our Shared Service Centre with a focus on our transactions teams including cash collections and payments.
  • Working as part of our payments team assisting with posting of invoices and making payments to suppliers
  • Reconciling supplier statements
  • Processing expense claims
  • Working as part of our cash collections team dealing with customers and allocating cash
  • Undertaking ad hoc tasks as required

General Finance Apprentice (up to 4 or 5 year programme – 2 year level 4 followed by 2/3 year level 7)

You’ll initially work towards the Association of Accounting Technicians, Level 4 qualification whilst you work alongside and learn from highly experienced colleagues who have worked as finance professionals for numerous years. You’ll then have the opportunity to go on to work towards Level 7 qualification (ACCA or CIMA).

Responsible for balance sheet reconciliations

Preparation of journals for month end reporting

Working with business unit finance to regularly review balance sheet

Rotations around different areas of finance across Tarmac. Our structured rotation programme allows a number of placements between 6 months and 12 months each, across our different finance teams to ensure you get a broad range of experiences in different teams.

Undertaking ad hoc tasks as required

Whilst you’re learning on the job, you’ll attend our core Skills Development Programme designed to expand your business knowledge, strengthen core skills and offer networking opportunities with other graduates, higher apprentices and key stakeholders across the Tarmac business in order to successfully transition into your destination role.

We’ll also fund your level 4 qualification in Professional Accounting, ensuring you receive professional recognition for the work you’ll be putting in! Once you’ve achieved your AAT qualification, we can support you with further professional training. You can move on to study for your level 7 qualification for either ACCA or CIMA. The Ideal Candidate

Qualifications required:

SSC Apprentice: Minimum of 5 GCSE's (or equivalent including AAT Level Accounting) grades A-C or numbered equivalent (9-4) including English and Maths.

General Finance Apprentice: Five GCSEs (or equivalent) A-C or numbered equivalent (9-4) including English and Maths, & x2 A Level 3 qualifications, including A levels, NVQ, BTEC, or Level 3 apprenticeship.
