Job Description

Our team of talented Service Engineers in the UK is growing! If you have experience in troubleshooting, field repair or providing technical support on Electrical and Mechanical systems and equipment, we’d love to speak with you.

As a Service Engineer at Smiths Detection, you will have good electronic repair troubleshooting methodology and will have solid communication skills, both oral and written. You will have the ability to read and follow electrical/mechanical schematics to assist in isolating fault to root cause component/assembly.

You will be working with Explosive Detection Systems (EDS), Conventional X-Ray Systems (CXS), or Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) equipment, specific training will be provided.

The role will provide the service to our systems in Gatwick, Southampton and Bournemouth airport. A car is included in the contract and the role will be mainly Monday to Friday in addition to an on-call rota shared by the team.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Meeting daily service repair needs and driving customer satisfaction.
  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining equipment in the field; providing customer training as required.
  • Documenting all inspection, maintenance, repair work and submitting paperwork in a timely basis.
  • Order, install, and return parts and managing repair parts cycle time
  • Reviewing all logs for open issues and preparing customer reports as necessary.
  • Participating in Service sales opportunities and assisting with promoting and implementing revenue programs.
  • Ensuring that tools and test equipment are properly maintained and calibrated
  • Assessing product/equipment performance based on field support data; recommending modifications or improvements.
  • Seeking to provide technical support to customers and other service professionals as required.
  • Establishing and maintaining close relationships with senior level Service Engineers and Product Managers in order to support the needs of the customer
  • Travel, overtime, and work hours other than Monday-Friday may be required. Our Services Engineers provide out of hours support where required, based on our ‘on-call’ rota.
  • Comply with and ensure department compliance with Company health, safety, and environmental policies.

The Individual

  • Located within 1,5h distance from Gatwick airport is essential, with the possibility to easily reach daily Southampton or Bournemouth when required.
  • Associated NFQ Level 5 or related working experience is an advantage
  • Eligibility to acquire an airport security pass is a key prerequisite for this role (Clear Criminal Record, Work History Check, Right to work in the UK, …)
  • Comfortable using MS Office Suite and an aptitude for learning specialized software programs
  • Experience in the use of metrology and handheld tools
  • Experience in troubleshooting, field repair or technical support activities centred on Electrical and Mechanical systems and equipment
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • A strong orientation for customer focus and teamwork
  • Willing and able to identify and support change and continuous improvement
