Job description
You will work towards qualifying as an Officer in Charge for electric fishing surveys and will be involved in boat work, so experience of fieldwork and biosecurity good practice is essential. You will be using a scheduling tool and utilising this technology to enhance delivery. You will maintain, interpret, and input into monitoring systems. You'll lead on the ordering of sampling equipment and maintaining the bottle & fishery stores. You will be an effective communicator, liaising with site contacts, members of the public and internal customers. You will train and mentor other team members to ensure consistent delivery to a high standard.
The field work can be physically demanding, and you will be required to sample in all weathers. You’ll be working alone for long periods of time, so you’ll need to prioritise your Health, Safety and wellbeing, be self-motivated and organised.
There will also be opportunity to support the Environment Agency’s Incident response.
The Lincolnshire and East Midlands Team is based across Lincolnshire, South Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire. You will be also expected to work across boundaries to support other teams. This is a field-based role and requires long, extensive driving in urban and rural locations.
Experience/Skills required:
- Field sample collection experience
- Training and mentoring staff
- Able to work independently as part of a dispersed team
- Good organisational skills
- Working in water confidently and safely
- Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers
- Required to use standard IT packages to deliver work as well as more specialised systems
- Experience of health, safety and wellbeing procedures including carrying out risk assessments
- Electric fishing experience
- Freshwater fish identification
- Experience of biosecurity procedures
You will be provided with a badged vehicle. The base location for this role is Trentside Office, Nottingham where you will drop off samples most days. The majority of the time you will be outside collecting data from locations across the East Midlands and Lincolnshire.
