1. Job Title: Fibre Optic Splicer

2. Reports to: Project Managers and Senior Project Manager

3. Job Purpose: The splicer is responsible for the task listed below for any given project and provides the link between the end customer and the PMO Team.

4. Duties/Accountabilities:

· Fibre Optic Splicing: Perform fusion splicing of fibre optic ribbon cables, ensuring precise alignment, low insertion loss, and high-quality connections.

· Cable Preparation: Strip, cleave, clean, and prepare fibre optic cables for splicing, using appropriate tools and techniques.

· Equipment Operation: Utilize and maintain fusion splicing machines, cleavers, and other specialized tools to ensure optimal performance and accurate splicing.

· Testing and Troubleshooting: Conduct tests and inspections, such as OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) testing, to verify the integrity and performance of spliced fibre optic cables. Identify and resolve any issues or defects.

· To accurately record and document splicing activities, test results, and cable locations. Maintain comprehensive project documentation and update project management systems as required.

· Working at height and in the underground network.

· Working to client and company Quality, Health & Safety processes, and procedures.

· Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines while working on-site or in the field. Comply with relevant industry standards and regulations, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and others.

· Ensure that all works comply with guidelines and relevant codes of practice.

· Production of construction & cabling work packages for internal or external teams.

· To drive consistency, quality, suitability, and cost-effectiveness.

· Work closely with relevant stakeholders, internal, external, local authorities to ensure effective and efficient implementation of the infrastructure and react to any change.

· Provide detailed project updates in line with customer SLA’s.

· Interpret design drawings and plans clearly.

· Act as a mentor to more junior engineers.

5. Special Features:

· Proven experience in fibre optic splicing, particularly with ribbon cables, in a professional setting. Previous experience working on telecommunication, data centre, or fibre optic network projects is highly desirable.

· Strong understanding of works within telecom installations and ideally PIA; cost-effective fibre optic, topology layout, fibre splice plans, cable duct & routing.

· Must be able to collaborate effectively with project teams, engineers, and technicians to ensure project goals are met. Coordinate work activities with other team members and provide technical support when needed.

· Field based role with approximately 95% of the time being spent in the field, along with time in ITI Office or Home for Report and Documentation writing.

· Out of Hours and weekend work will be as required.

6. Authority:

· If working alone or if senior engineer is not on-site, will act as lead engineer, be the point of contact for all customer queries and responsible for all site issues including Health and Safety of Staff.

7. Requirements/Competencies:

Knowledge:

· Solid understanding of fibre optic technology, cable types, splicing techniques, and associated equipment. Familiarity with industry standards and best practices..

· Understanding of chamber and duct construction.

· Fusion splicing.

· Experience with Blown Fibre Installation.

· Live network splicing and testing.

· Experience of working with Openreach, ideally including PIA.

· Detailed understanding of UK local and national authority regulations in respect to civil engineering works.

· Detailed understanding and working experience of Wayleave.

· Understanding of FTTP and FTTC methodologies.

· Knowledge of NRSWA, CDM, Code Powers and SafeDig.

· Experience of achieving critical deadlines.

· Ability to identify engineering risks and associated solutions.

· Ability to read and interpret drawings and Product documentation.

Problem solving capability:

· Individually seeks solutions to problems, failing this seeks to resolve issues by other means using experience.

· Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to fibre optic splicing and network connectivity.

· Able to provide technical information regarding site design and build.

· Ability to update design documents and interpret test results on several test devices.

· Ability to evaluate situations that may arise on the site and implement a cost-effective solution within a limited time frame whilst under pressure.

· Ability to understand customer specific requirements and dimensions effectively.
