Post available: Part Time Support Worker (up to 15 hours per week). Over 3-4 days.
One will be a Tuesday from 3.30pm and a Saturday (times to be flexible). Other dates to be discussed. Potential for further hours in the future). Note that Female

Hours: You will need to be flexible with times and days

Salary: £15.00 p/h weekdays and weekends. £9.50 p/h sleep in shift, double time on bank holidays

About the role

This role is to support our client, a 20-year-old girl who has a brain injury, physical difficulties, and is visually impaired, within an established rehabilitation team.

She lives at home with her family, a small dog and a tortoise. She can be shy, but she loves reading and music and musicals, and has an interest in DJjing. She will some assistance with domestic duties, like cleaning and cooking. There isn’t any requirement to provide personal care, but prompting her to do so may be required.

You’ll need your own car with business insurance. You must be a confident driver who is willing to do short local drives when on shift, but from time to time this could entail longer journeys to meet our client’s needs. You will be travelling to
Manchester every Tuesday.

Job Specifications

1) To work with our client, a woman who has a brain injury and visual impairment, in her own home and in the community.

2) To enable her to participate in recreational and leisure activities, both at home and in the community - such as caring for her pets, going to the cinema, cafes, and pubs.

3) To work alongside her with some household tasks, like food shopping, laundry, preparing meals.

4) To carry out light domestic duties in his/her house as appropriate, such as vacuuming, washing, and ironing.

5) To act as a driver, using own vehicle mainly locally, and further afield if needed

6) To aid and support the client as directed by the Case Manager.
7) To follow an agreed approach, and use strategies documented in the support plan, working in collaboration with the client’s family, case manager,
Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist and any other professionals when required.

8) To undertake training and supervision as agreed by the Case Manager.
9) To ensure client confidentiality in all matters relating to the client.
10) To provide assistance and support as directed by the Case Manager and to be responsible to the client via the Case Manager.
11) Any other appropriate and reasonable task in relation to the employment as agreed with the client and Case Manager.
12) To provide daily ongoing support/prompts to assist the client to undertake personal care and domestic activities.
13) To accompany the client on holidays and weekends away when required.

About you

Essential Qualifications/Experience

  • You must be able to read information contained in reports, and also present information clearly and accurately when communicating with the team via emails and reports.
  • You must have the ability to work on your own unsupervised.
  • You must have a full UK driving licence and be a confident driver and have own vehicle.
  • You must be prepared to have business class insurance on your own vehicle
  • You must be prepared to provide prompting for personal care

Desirable experience

  • To have a knowledge or level of understanding around Brain Injury
  • To have a knowledge or level of understanding around Visual Impairement
  • To have experience of working in a community setting or people’s own homes.

Skills and Aptitudes

The following skills and aptitudes are essential when working with our client.

1) You should have a non – judgmental approach with the ability to see things from other peoples’ perspectives, and be respectful of their lifestyle choices.

2) A calm communication style with clear pronunciation when speaking.
3) An understanding of the ‘enabling approach’ and the ability to judge when direction needs to be offered to the client.
4) A sense of humour is vital, along with an understanding of appropriate boundaries, with a mature, confident, and professional approach.
5) To be able to integrate an understanding of brain injury - displaying empathy but with a non-patronising approach.
6) The ability to follow the support plan, the case manager/team leader and guidance, and to accept feedback.
7) To display an understanding that the workplace is also the client’s home.
8) Have flexibility and a willingness to step in and help the client and family when the situation demands it.
9) Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a variety of people involved with the client.
10) To be self-motivated and able to work unsupervised with the client
11) Be Conscientiousness, have good timekeeping and good record keeping, using paper documentation and/or a laptop.
12) Ability to identify and manage potential risks, to safeguard the client.
13) The ability to use initiative and adapt to different situations and learn new skills.

Pay and Conditions

  • You will be employed by the client via their Deputy.
  • You will be line managed by the Case Manager on behalf of the Deputy.
  • The contract allows for 5.6 weeks paid leave and 2 weeks (paid) sick leave.
  • You will receive initial and on-going training, plus regular supervision from the Case Manager.
  • Rates of pay: £15.00 p/h weekday and weekends, £9.50 p/h sleep in shift, and double time per hour on bank holidays
