Job description

London – Docklands, Stratford and USS Campus

Do you have proven experience of working in operational policing and criminology, a flair for analysing large amounts of assessment data and a good understanding of the academic research development model? Are you looking for a challenging role in an environment that is open, vibrant and welcomes new ideas? Then join the University of East London’s School of Business and Law as an External Examiner.

The University of East London is a careers-led university that’s dedicated to supporting our students to develop the skills, emotional intelligence and creativity needed to thrive in a constantly changing world. We’re also part of a consortium of universities that deliver the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) and the Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP). Our School of Business and Law student body is rich in its diversity, with students drawn from a wide range of backgrounds and age groups, with a high proportion from low-income groups. Within it, the Centre of Professional Policing (CoPP) has several policing programmes running and works collaboratively with a number of police forces, including the Met.

As an External Examiner, you will be responsible for verifying that the University's internal marking policies and moderation adhere to the required assessment methods. We will also rely on you to ensure criteria are aligned to the learning outcomes and teaching activities and adhere to the expected national higher education standards (QAAHE - The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education). Reviewing samples of assessments as aligned to the module learning outcomes and assessment criteria, to ensure consistency across the board in terms of assessment quality and moderation, will be an important aspect of the role too. In addition, when it comes to commenting on the standards of courses and awards and any opportunities to improve the quality of students’ learning, making recommendations to Examination Boards or acting as a consultant to any proposed changes to classifications, again, we will count on you to deliver.

To succeed, you will need a PG certificate or Masters in Policing/ Criminology or equivalent qualification and/or a proven relevant background. Alternatively, a Level 7 qualification in criminology and some experience in the legal and academic fields would be considered. Some Level 4 – 6 Higher Education experience and/or knowledge of the End Point Assessment (EPA) process would be useful too, as would an understanding of Police training and development and knowledge of the Policing Education Qualification Framework - although this is not essential. You should, however, be used to working with multi-disciplined teams across different departments, familiar with Key Performance indicator (KPI) targets and proficient working with Moodle, and in a virtual learning environment.

So, if you have what we are looking for and are keen to take on a new challenge, apply today.

At the University of East London, we aim to attract and retain the best possible staff and offer a working environment at the heart of a dynamic region with excellent transport links. You can look forward to a warm, sincere welcome, genuine camaraderie and mobility in an institution led with passion, visibility and purpose. Your impact, resilience and sense of collegiality will directly contribute to the University’s future and those of the students whose lives you will touch and change forever. We also offer a great range of benefits including pension, family friendly policies and an on-site nursery and gym at our Docklands Campus.

To apply, please email your CV to: [email protected].
