Are you an enthusiastic and experienced Physiotherapist, with a special interest in cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology? Do you have a passion for service development?

Following the commencement of the Targeted Lung Health Check (TLHC) initiative in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire ICS, we have the opportunity for a dynamic and innovative physiotherapist to join our team at NUH.

An exciting opportunity for an experienced respiratory physiotherapist with a special interest in Cardiothoracic surgery to work alongside a new clinical specialist physiotherapist role and existing team leader role to integrate this work into our existing service. There's also the opportunity to work collaboratively with NUH’s prehab team in regards to the lung cancer pathway.

The post holder will be primarily responsible, alongside the team leader, for managing the physiotherapy service provided to cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology patients.

This service covers:-

Barclay Thoracic Unit

10 bedded Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

6 bedded Cardiac High Dependency Unit.

Acute Coronary Care Unit

Cardiac Surgery Ward

Cardiology wards

Leadership skills, service development and research opportunities are well supported with Band 7 training and one to one input from both the therapy service management team and clinical leads/specialists. There will also be excellent peer support from the existing band 7 team.


Main duties of the job

This post requires a wide range of respiratory experience. Specific experience of working in cardiothoracic surgery and critical care is essential. Knowledge of pathways for cancer care would be an advantage. We are looking for a clinician who is an expert in assessing and treating these patients, who can deliver education and training to a broad spectrum of clinicians and continue to adopt a collaborative MDT approach to optimise our patient journeys.


The successful applicant will need excellent communication skills to facilitate close working relationships with their peers and members of the MDT. They will require skills in audit, service evaluation and development, as well as organisational and time management skills and the ability to motivate themselves and others.


As this service forms part of the critical care and surgery physiotherapy team at Nottingham City hospital, the successful candidate will be required to work flexibly across Critical Care and surgery to meet service need. Skills in service prioritisation, daily line management and coordination of clinical staff are required.


The successful candidate will support the wider inpatient therapy teams at NUH in the management of and participation of out of hours work.

The Physiotherapy service is part of the Therapies and Rehabilitation Services pathway, which is one of the pathways that together make up the Clinical Support Division at NUH. We are a diverse pathway of AHPs and support staff, employing over 600 staff, who works together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to. Our HCPC registered AHP professionals comprise of physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, orthotists, prosthetists and speech and language therapists. We have a Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction, and many of the pathway leadership team have pathway AHP backgrounds to support our staff. There are also Practice Development Therapists to support career development for all.

Permanent 0.8 WTE (30 hours) Band 7 post

Core hours are worked Monday to Friday

Additional duties will include participation in on call and weekend working as well as a late shifts (1-9PM). Weekends are rostered with expected frequency of 1:4, an on-call average 1 per month and late shifts approximately 1-2 per month but all are dependent on service need and staffing levels

  • Experience of operational management of an acute team
  • Able to deliver training and educate individuals, team and wider MDT
  • Knowledge of current guidelines and best practice within specialism and able to evaluate/audit service against these
