The new World Service China Unit will produce digital-first high-impact and high-quality content in both Mandarin and English about the global China story, serving not only the Chinese audience but also other WS languages and domestic output
Main Responsibilities- To be editorially, financially and managerially responsible for a range of productions and ouput.
- Innovating & evolving strategy for the department, anticipating audience needs & maintaining relevance on all existing and future platforms.
- Ensure all programmes/content are delivered on time and within budget, encouraging the highest possible creative standards throughout.
- Financial acumen and a strong sense of driving best value for the licence fee. Able to manage budgets, control costs and maximise value across all expenditure.
- A commitment to creating both diverse content and teams to reflect our audiences and ensuring best practice.
- To take a lead role in driving forward new projects and new ways of working, collaborating with other departments. To provide clear direction, editorial insight and quality control for both ongoing and newly commissioned projects.
- Working knowledge of Mandarin language, written and spoken, and excellent level of English - including writing and subbing skills
- Track record of commissioning, producing and delivering high-quality impactful content
- Understanding of audience metrics and how to use it to improve commissioning and delivery
- Able to demonstrate an innovative and creative way of looking at stories and how to bring them to life; able to harness team’s creativity
- Experience in developing and producing long-form investigative journalism
- Experience in working with digital storytelling including long-form videos and ability to demonstrate understanding of what makes a good podcast
- Outstanding knowledge of “the big China story” – News & Current Affairs in general and stories related to the impact of Chinese policies, investments and cultural influence
