Job description

Organisation Details

The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

This is a really exciting time to join the MMO following the UK becoming an independent coastal state, embedding new repatriated functions and services with an increased focus on the protection and enhancing of the marine environment.

Driven by government’s aim for clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans and seas, MMO’s purpose is to protect and enhance our precious marine environment and support UK economic growth by enabling sustainable marine activities and development.

We are the independent regulator for England’s seas, professionally delivering service-focussed outcomes for our customers.

We are a team of around 400 people and combine our Newcastle upon Tyne and London operations with a local presence around the English coastline in Brixham, Beverley, Harwich, Hastings, Lowestoft, North Shields, Hayle, Plymouth, Poole, Portsmouth, Preston, Scarborough, Shoreham, Whitehaven.

Job description

Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing constitutes one of the most serious threats to the sustainable exploitation of living aquatic resources and jeopardises the very foundation of the UK fisheries policy and international efforts to promote better ocean governance.

The IUU team is responsible for ensuring that all UK Imports and Exports are subject to strict legislative requirements which ensure traceability and adherence to international rules on sustainable and responsible fishing.

Successful candidates will undertake compliance checks as part of the Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing team within the MMO Operations Directorate, supporting industry compliance with domestic and international regulations relating to imports, exports and to prevent IUU fishing.

Controls exist for exports of catches made by UK vessels and imports of third country fish. You will progressively learn about UK national, European and international fisheries control systems in order to certify that UK and third country catches are legal. This will involve a degree of consultation with coastal enforcement officers in all the UK Fisheries Administrations.

You will undertake checks against various platforms, using our dynamics 365 case management system to update files and remove any blockers to trade. A key part of the role is to engage with industry and other third party stakeholders such as Port Health Authorities to provide guidance as to IUU regulatory requirements.

Please refer to the attached candidate pack for full job details.

Selection Process - Candidates will be required to upload a MMO CV. Please use the template attached to the vacancy advert. FAILURE TO USE THE MMO CV TEMPLATE ATTACHED WILL RESULT IN YOUR APPLICATION NOT BEING SIFTED.
