Type: Casual, part-time contract, hourly rate of $15.81.

What you offer?

Reporting to the Camp Director, the Otonabee Summer Program Staff implements and facilitates the delivery of quality recreational programs, services and experiences to children and youth aged 4 to 16 enrolled at Camp Otonabee. The Program Staff ensures that children and youth have a positive experience leading to personal growth through fun and rewarding recreation and sport programs. This position fosters self-esteem as well as problem solving and conflict resolution skills in program participants, while working to create an atmosphere of safety, belonging and positive development in accordance with Y policies and procedures.

The Program Staff presents a professional appearance and attitude at all times, and ensures excellent customer service is provided to members and participants by proactively addressing concerns or issues and escalating them to the Coordinator of Camping, as necessary. This position ensures that health and safety regulations and YMCA-YWCA policies and procedures are upheld. The Program Staff adheres to and ensures that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region are conveyed to members, staff and volunteers with every interaction.

The Program staff will be responsible for the setup, take down and supervision of program areas

The Program staff will function as a team member and will lead program delivery and support for various groups of campers ages 4-16.

Possible Areas of Focus:

  • Adventure Programming (high ropes climbing and challenge courses)
  • Waterfront Programming (swimming, canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding)

Some of the tasks of this position include:

  • Requires a moderate level of physical activity engage in sports and play with program participants
  • Deliver high quality program facilitation of boating activities, and high ropes
  • Perform some housekeeping responsibilities – sanitation of equipment, cleaning program areas, etc.
  • Assist in set up and take down of program areas and equipment
  • Participate in swimming, canoeing, rock climbing, kayaking, and other activities
  • Exposure to variable noise levels
  • The work environment includes indoor, outdoor and aquatic environments. The program is offered during all kinds of weather from hot summer days to rainy cold days.
  • Staff will be on their feet for the majority of the work day, and will be walking, running, jumping, and engaging in active play with program participants. This may include adventure-based programming such as high ropes, canoeing or swimming. Staff are expected to actively supervise campers in these environments as well. On the waterfront staff are expected to be in the water engaged with participants.

The successful candidate will have the following:

Language

  • Bilingualism an asset
  • Ability to work in English, oral and written communication

Experience, Skills, and Abilities

  • National Lifeguard Certification, Bronze Cross, Paddle Canada, or other relevant certifications are strongly considered as assets for this position
  • CUI Level 1 or Level 2 or previous high ropes experience/hours is considered an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR “C” certification
  • Well-developed interpersonal, conflict resolution skills and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with children, members, staff and volunteers
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Ability to maintain calm demeanor in stressful situations
  • Ability to be energetic and outgoing
  • Ability to give first priority to the campers’ needs
  • Ability to be self-motivating, enthusiastic and a responsible individual with strong leadership skills
  • Committed to the healthy development of children

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must already have a valid permit to work in Canada.
  • Criminal Reference Check for the Vulnerable Sector, not more than 6 months old is required
  • Annually all staff must complete the mandatory training for the Protecting Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons, and submit the certificate of completion.
