About Us

Sprott Shaw Language College is looking for a qualified individual for the Global Leaders Summer Camp Academic Manager position. The Camp runs from July 3 to August 11th, 2023. There will be a training session in late June.

This year, our SSLC Global Leaders Summer Camp is focused on some of the topics related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations. The program is for international students from 13 to 17 years old. Students will have an opportunity to learn about and gain insight into the concepts of SDGs, and explore possible individual and collective choices or actions to make a difference in the world. The summer camp consists of English language instruction based on SDG themes in the morning, and SDG topic-based activities, outings or project work in the afternoon, as well as weekend / evening recreational activities and a trip to the Rocky Mountains. The summer camp will take place at the University of British Columbia Vancouver Campus.

SSLC is seeking a committed and enthusiastic individual who shares interest in SDGs for the position of ESL Instructor. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to enhance their teaching experience with SDG subject-related ESL contents, and demonstrate their teaching skills in a fun and engaging environment.

The duties include:

  • Teach the required curriculum contents and ensure that they are covered during the class hours as scheduled
  • Ensure that students are fully engaged in SDG-topic-related lessons and activities in class
  • Conduct fair assessment of students’ skills as scheduled, and provide feedback
  • Check and ensure all the required classroom supplies are adequate and sufficient
  • Enforce English Only Policy
  • Report to the Academic Manager any concerns or issues regarding curriculum delivery, classroom management or individual students in a timely manner
  • Assist the Academic Manager in creating and maintaining class lists whenever required; provide feedback from the classroom about individual students to facilitate the placement process
  • Provide academic support to students as required
  • Work with the Academic Manager to deal with any disciplinary issues that may arise with students in an academic setting
  • Assist the Academic Manager with administration of the TOEFL Junior test, if required

Required qualifications, work experience, skills:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary educational institution
  • ESL teaching experience and / or TESL (or equivalent) qualifications as required
  • Police Record Check / Clearance for the Vulnerable Sector / Minors
  • Familiarity with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Experience working with large and diverse groups of varying backgrounds and ages
  • Experience leading teens
  • Ability to follow the determined lesson schedule and deliver set curriculum contents
  • Strong sense of responsibility, especially in working with young students
  • Excellent communication (both oral and written) and organizational skills
  • Basic computer skills (including Microsoft Office)
  • Ability to follow instructions, and respect and abide by the school / program policies and rules to work as part of a team
  • Ability to think creatively and critically; make decisions and problem-solve based on professional, ethical and legal considerations
  • Ability to resolve conflicts in a professional, diplomatic and respectful manner
  • Clear spoken and written English
  • A positive, upbeat attitude

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 5 weeks
Part-time hours: 15-40 per week

Salary: $17.60-$25.15 per hour

  • French not required

  • Vancouver, BC: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree (required)

Experience:

  • ESL teaching: 1 year (preferred)

Licence/Certification:

  • First Aid Certification (preferred)
