Job description
Our ambition at Citizens Advice is to: “Give people the knowledge and the confidence they need to find their way forward - whoever they are, and whatever their problem.”
This ambition and our unique service enables us to help millions of people each year, giving us a robust insight into some of the challenges being faced in society. By providing advice that helps people find a way forward, delivering advocacy, gathering evidence and insight, and through our statutory functions, we can have a significant impact on tackling inequality.
Our organisational aims are grounded in EDI principles. EDI is integral to all we do and the service we provide, and equality disparities lead many people to seek our support in the first place. To address these systemic inequalities, Citizens Advice takes a social justice approach to EDI.
Since 2020 we have accelerated and refocused our work to deliver on our EDI ambitions. The national charity has pursued a transformational agenda to redefine our approach around concepts of social justice, driving concrete action to deliver EDI in practice. The EDI Team acts as strategic hub within the organisation setting the EDI direction and priorities for the organisation, including guiding the organisation on how best to support marginalised clients, staff and volunteers. In addition to providing EDI leadership, we also: offer EDI subject matter expertise, share EDI insight and intelligence and build EDI capability across the service.
We are currently hiring an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Manager who can lead the successful delivery of projects, activities, and workstreams to achieve our service-wide equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) goals, with a particular focus on our Inclusive Access programme of work, aimed at closing the access gaps for minoritised clients.
The ideal candidate will be managing a team to deliver on the organisation's EDI goals. This will involve overseeing the delivery of various programs, including the Race Matters initiative, building EDI capability, and working with local offices.
The role will also require collaboration with other teams across the organisation to set, measure, monitor, and drive the achievement of the EDI ambitions, with a particular focus on inclusive access. This will be in line with your organisation's strategic framework and business plan.
Please provide answers to the following questions in your cover letter to evidence the following essential criteria:
- Significant experience in delivering and managing large scale and diverse equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) projects and initiatives in complex organisations. Including the coordination of programme work streams, managing dependencies inside and outside of the project using project management methodologies.
- Demonstrable proven experience of leading and managing a team to deliver goals and achieve outcomes. This includes a proven ability to create a positive working environment in which EDI is well managed, dignity at work is upheld and staff are empowered and motivated.
- Highly developed and specialist knowledge of key EDI concepts, good practice, and equality legislation and their application across a service, such as Citizens Advice to improve the outcomes of minoritised clients.
- Evidenced experience of strategic thinking, planning and analysis with the ability to develop inventive EDI solutions to challenges, best practice systems, processes and tools that create positive change outcomes.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is of strategic importance within the organisation and recognised as integral to all we do as a service.
Central to pursuing our EDI mission is building diverse and inclusive teams in which everyone has a sense of belonging. We believe inclusion is a social justice issue - a principle that underpins all our EDI work. To that end, we particularly welcome applications from people we would like to see better represented in our organisation and sector - people of colour, LGBTQ+ people and disabled people. If you are disabled and meet our minimum criteria you will be guaranteed an interview for this role and we will provide reasonable adjustments as needed. We follow the social model of disability.
