Duties
As a Physical Scientist (Recent Graduate), you will:
- Travel throughout the entire BPA service area (i.e., Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Western Montana).
- Assist with the design, coordination, and oversight of sampling and monitoring efforts/programs.
- Assist with investigations and cleanups of BPA sites.
- Provide scientific and technical environmental advice, guidance and on-site assistance for responding to emergencies.
- Assist Pollution Prevention & Abatement Staff and the Regions by developing strategies and providing field support to achieve or maintain regulatory compliance and remedy potential problems.
- Plan and carry out environmental programs and projects within the framework of applicable laws.
- Assist with the research, organization, and maintenance of scientific and technical information for use in environmental studies and projects.
- Monitor performance and compliance with contracts to assure that BPA receives goods or services that conform to the scientific and technical requirements as set forth in those contracts.

- Moderate physical lifting as well as other is also required.
- Frequent overnight travel (11 or more days of overnight travel per month for field work).
- Work is performed in the office and field. Fieldwork requires moderate physical exertion hiking through BPA rights of way, which includes very steep and uneven terrain. The work involves lifting and positioning generators weighing up to 50 lbs.
- The work is performed in a variety of weather conditions. Exposure to hazardous substances and various types of contamination may occur. Protective clothing and respiratory equipment are required when appropriate.
Conversion:
To be eligible for conversion, a Recent Graduate must: (1) complete at least one year of continuous service; (2) be a U.S. citizen; (3) demonstrate successful job performance (4) meet the qualification standards for the position to which converted; (5) receive a recommendation for conversion from the first-level supervisor; and (6) meet agency-specific requirements, as specified in the Participant Agreement.
Qualifications
- Recent graduate who has completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution.
- OR
- Student who within nine months of the closing date of this announcement will meet the education requirements and will graduate with a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution. A student may not be appointed to a position until they have graduated.
- OR
- Preference eligible veteran who was precluded from applying due to their military service obligation begin their two-year eligibility period upon release or discharge from active duty. Eligibility for these veterans cannot exceed six years after degree or certificate completion."
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

B. Combination of education and experience - education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
GS-07:

Specialized experience for this position is defined as: Experience in 1) taking measurements and collecting data; 2) conducting routine calculations, including plotting and checking of numerical data; AND 3) applying principles, theories, practices, and techniques in the physical sciences.
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows:
- One year of graduate-level education, or superior academic achievement (S.A.A.) gained in a bachelor degree curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled (based on class standing, grade-point average, or honor society membership). - Combination of education and experience as described above. Less than one year of specialized experience may be combined with completed graduate education.

- Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree, or master's, or equivalent graduate degree; your education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. -OR-
- Combination of graduate education and experience as described above. Less than one year of specialized experience may be combined with graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level (i.e., credit hours beyond the first year of full-time study may be credited).
