Job description
If you’re part of the Environment Agency (EA), you’re part of the solution. Working with us means protecting and improving the environment and tackling issues of national importance. We’re based across England, and our responsibilities span industry regulation, flood defences, land contamination, water quality, fisheries and conservation.
Such a broad scope of work calls for diverse, multi-skilled teams. Together, we’ll promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.
Permitting Officer is a key role which supports the regulatory duties carried out by the EA. You’ll assess applications from across the country for a range of activities which have the potential to cause harm to the environment. By carrying out technical assessments and working closely with other technical teams, the permits you deliver will help to protect the environment and local communities.
You’ll join a team of permitting officers within our National Permitting Service where you will undergo a full training program. You will build a caseload of applications, and working within environmental permitting legislation, make decisions on whether to grant an environmental permit or licence.
It's highly varied and challenging work that plays a key role in creating a cleaner and safer environment for people and wildlife. You’ll develop relationships with a range of partners and support key functions including flooding and environmental response.

We’re looking for candidates with a genuine passion for the environment, who are keen to protect it by regulating potentially damaging activities.
You’ll be skilled in data and information management and be able to gather and manipulate data by analysing and tailoring it to your audience. You’ll be able to have difficult conversations with customers and be confident making risk-based decisions.
