Entry Level Position: Salary and Benefits for Subbing while Earning a Low-Cost Credential
As a TeachStart Scholar Fellow, you can expect:
- Salary: $55,000 annualized salary (paid over 26 pay periods)

As a TeachStart Fellow, you will:

Applicants do not need a background in education, or teaching certification – all experience levels and backgrounds are welcome to apply
You should apply if you:
- Are ready to fulfill your purpose as a change agent in the classroom
- Can submit to and pass a background check and TB test
- Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum 2.5 GPA
- Valid Substitute Permit or willing to obtain one with support from TeachStart
As a TeachStart Fellow: you will select one of the following pathways based on your current needs and long-term career goals:
- Scholar+ Pathway: Interested in pursuing a long-term teaching career? Hoping to earn your CA teaching credential? This two-year pathway will support you as you gain teaching experience and obtain a low-cost teacher credential. You will begin subbing full-time during your first year before transitioning into a teacher of record position during your second.
- Scholar Pathway: Interested in a full-time, salaried, benefits-eligible career as a substitute teacher? The Scholar pathway will offer you a fulfilling career as a sub in the classroom with ongoing professional development to continuously support your growth and increase your effectiveness in the classroom in addition to unlimited access to TeachStart’s Professional Learning Community.
