Role: Entomology Technician
Contract: Full-time permanent (37.5 hours per week, including one day weekend work)
Location: London Bridge
Holiday allowance: 36 days inc. bank holidays
Start date: ASAP
About the Role
We are Entocycle, an insect technology company with a mission to accelerate the global transition to sustainable protein. We are looking for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Entomology Technician to join our team. As a member of the Entomology Team, you will be primarily responsible for maintaining our black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) colony, but will also be providing testing support to the Entomology R&D team. You are expected to have experience with scientific data collection, excellent attention to detail and good numerical and writing skills.
You will report to the Insectary Manager, but will work and communicate with a wide range of internal and external partners so excellent communication and interpersonal skills are key. You will be part of a busy team working on many projects simultaneously. You should, therefore, be able to manage your own workload effectively and be able to multitask efficiently. You should also be willing to take on new tasks and contribute to the wider organisation.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
1. Colony maintenance
- Rear and maintain the black soldier fly colony following SOPs and adhering to COSHH guidelines
- Measure key insect performance indicators and monitor colony health
- Keep detailed and organised records of quantitative and qualitative data
- Ensure that R&D insect demands are met by coordinating with team members and planning ahead
- Keep a clean and well organised work space
- Assist in the maintenance of the insectary space and procurement of materials required for operations
2. R&D trials support (as required)
- Assist with commissioning and decommissioning experiments, data collection and data entry
- Assist with data collection and keep detailed and well-organised records
- Provide feedback on testing methodology for SOP development
- Safely operate the machinery required for insect breeding and production
- Assist with literature research and administrative activities
Desired skills & experience
Core criteria
- Minimum BSc degree in life science
- Experience with data collection & data entry
- Ability to work to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Ability to comply to a Health & Safety policy
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proven ability to work independently and within a team
- Willingness to work at least one day over the weekend (5 day working week)
- Fluent in reading, writing and speaking English
- Ability to lift 15kg
Bonus criteria
- Experience with insect handling or rearing
- Research experience within the private sector
- Interest in sustainability and innovation
