Description of Work


Salary Grade: NC07 / Salary Range: $34,936 - $61,137

This posting is for an Engineering Technician I position located in the Matthews Resident Engineer’s Office. This position supports and assists higher level technicians and engineers in functional areas such as construction inspection, surveying, testing, NPDES inspections and construction traffic control. Position will also perform entry-level technical work involving sampling of materials and basic inspection duties to determine adherence to codes/standards by both NCDOT and private contractors. Must be proficient in detailed record keeping. Daily duties will include, but are not limited to: writing diaries and reports on project operations, completing various material reports, documenting pay records, performing construction calculations, and computer/iPad entry of reports/data. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours as necessary.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
  • Computer experience including office software and drafting software
Additional Expectations:
The employee must apply the Department’s safety program to operations. The ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards present on construction sites including traffic, heights, weather extremes, and traversing rough/uneven terrain is needed. The employee must be able to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both orally and in writing. The employee will need to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment. The employee must have proficiency using computers and electronic tablets in the record keeping of field data. A general knowledge of surveying methods and procedures is preferred. The employee must be able to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing. Safety toe shoes are required. A valid driver's license is preferred.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
